UFC News: Chris Weidman On If Anderson Silva Deserves Instant Rematch, Talks His Gameplan

Instant rematches are a mixed bag in MMA. Sometimes, the fight was so good and so close that everyone wants to see a second tilt. Other times, fans and fighters alike feel that they cause unnecessary and unwarranted stagnation within a division.

Then there are situations like Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva, where we saw the sport's most dominant champion dethroned by a hungry challenger who capitalized on a rookie mistake. Though the bout ended early and decisively, very few are arguing against Silva being granted an immediate rematch – even Weidman sees nothing unfair about running it back with The Spider.

"He's the greatest of all time and he deserves an instant rematch – and I have no problem giving it to him," said Weidman.

That may also be due largely to the fact that Weidman is supremely confident in his ability to recreate the ending of their first encounter – or at least to emerge victorious again anyway that he can.

"I'm telling Anderson Silva my gameplan. This is my gameplan: I'm gonna walk forward, I'm gonna put pressure on him, I'm gonna cut him off. If he has his hands down, I'm gonna punch him in the face. If he has his hands up and is expecting me to punch him in the face, I'm gonna take him down," said the champ.

"I'm not afraid to get hit. I'm gonna be walking forward with my chin down and my teeth gritted. I don't care what he throws at me, I'm gonna be there."

UFC 168: Weidman vs. Silva 2 takes place on December 28 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
