ABC news are reporting that authorities have tracked down the individual who wrote Nancy Benoit’s death on wikipedia hours before the Benoit tragedy was discovered by Georgia police. Authorities seized the computer which the individual used to examine any potential involvement or knowledge in the tragedy.
"It is unbelievable what a hindrance this has put on our investigation," said Lt. Tommy Pope, a spokesman for the Fayette County, Ga., Sheriff's Department. Georgia police told ABC News: "We've got to put a lot of effort and time into working to prove or disprove that someone put up a hoax situation or that somebody was conceiving the death from out of state."
The identity of the person responsible for posting on the wikipedia website has not been revealed yet and until the investigation has been completed on whether that person had any knowledge of the Benoit murder-suicide, the person’s identity will not be revealed.
The individual responsible for the wikipedia posting sent an apology to wikipedia. Wikipedia staff has confirmed the IP address of the apology and the Nancy Benoit posting are identical.
