Over the past weekend I got to catch a screener of the indie film WrestleManiac, a mockumentary about two brothers who are the son of a retired pro wrestler who are making their way up the independent circuit with hopes to one day make it into the WWE.

The film stars Matthew Brown, who plays Matt Cassidy, a trainer for WWE Hall Of Famer Johnny Rodz' pro wrestling school. His brother, Chris Cassidy (Christophen McGovern), has aspirations to make it into the WWE and is constantly coming up with new gimmicks for himself, including 'James Blond' (complete with tuxedo and dress shoes) and 'G-String' (where he would wear just a . . . you guessed it). During the film they encounter clumsy giants that they have to train, being bumped off of indie shows and a controlling girlfriend feeding Chris Cassidy bad gimmick ideas.

The film also contains cameos by Johnny Rodz and Matt Striker (before his WWE days). It's a pretty fun movie that I'd definitely recommend checking out, and I found myself chuckling throughout the entire film. It's been getting good reviews, including the New York Daily News saying that "'WrestleManiac' is to the subculture of independent wrestling what 'This Is Spinal Tap' was to Rock 'n' roll." Variety also reviewed the film, saying it contained "Good laughs".
