>> The Wrestler finally hits DVD and Blu-Ray tomorrow and I got a Blu-Ray review copy of the film last week. I've said several times before that I felt that the film was the best film of 2008, and is a must watch for any wrestling fan. So in this review, I wanted to talk more about the special features.
The Blu-Ray copy of the movie contains a digital copy, which you can store on your laptop and take anywhere with you.
Both the DVD and Blu-Ray copies also feature "The Wrestler" music video by Bruce Springsteen (how that song wasn't nominated for an Oscar for Best Song is beyond me), a 45 minute behind the scenes look at the making, and a 25 minute roundtable discussion with Roddy Piper, Lex Luger, Diamond Dallas Page, Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine.
The 45 minute making of feature is an informative documentary on how the film came about and was made. It shows backstage footage of Mickey Rourke training for the wrestling sequences, as well as a lot of behind the scenes footage from CZW and ROH shows, where portions of the film was filmed.
Even more interesting was the roundtable discussion with Roddy Piper, Lex Luger, Diamond Dallas Page, Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine. The discussion was about 25 minutes, and started out with the wrestlers talking about their appreciation of the film. From there, the discussion was more about their own experiences in the business, and how real professional wrestling is. Luger drew parallels to his own life with Mickey Rourke's character in the film, noting how he had lost everything until finding Christ and is working to repair his relationship with his daughter. All the guys talked about the injuries they've faced in the ring. Luger went on to say that he hopes the film brings to light what many wrestlers live like after being out of the spotlight and that promoters start providing pensions and health care (if Benoit's death and the media circus that surrounded it couldn't make it happen, it's more than highly unlikely that this film will). All in all, it was cool to see the guys out of their element and just chatting about their experiences (like why wrestlers love strip clubs and more).
You can purchase The Wrestler from our store. To purchase the DVD of the film for only $16.99, click here. To purchase the 2 disc Blu-Ray Hi-Def version of the film for only $25.99, click here. You can view a trailer below:
