Rampage On Title Shot, Tito Ortiz Wants To Be Champion, Alvarez-Chandler Still In Works
However, Jackson (35-11) wasn't sold on the idea of facing Newton, who unified the belts with a recent victory over Attila Vegh. It appears Jackson and Newton (23-7-1) share the same coach and that could cause some issues in the fight camp.
"Emanuel and I share the same coach, Antonio McKee," said Jackson, during the post-fight press conference. "That is a factor in this. Emanuel and I both share (McKee) and we train together sometimes. I don't know how that's going to work."
Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney didn't make an official announcement regarding a Jackson-Newton fight. There was talk of doing Jackson-Lawal 2 after the decision was hotly contested.
- To the surprise of no one, Tito Ortiz still wants to be a champion. In fact, after submitting Bellator middleweight champion Alexander Shlemenko Saturday night, he has his sights set on gold.
Ortiz earned a first round technical submission win over Shlemenko at Bellator 120, and informed members of the media during the post-fight press conference that he has three fights left on his current deal with the promotion.
"I want to be world champion when I retire," Ortiz said.
The former UFC light heavyweight champion improved to 17-11-1 in his career, but has won just twice since 2006. His other victory came over Ryan Bader, also via submission, inside the Octagon.
- Among the items to come out of Bellator 120 was that lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler might still be in the works. During his post-press conference media scrum, Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney stated that the contract signed by Alvarez holds Chandler's name in it. The two were expected to main event Bellator 120 Saturday night.
"The reality of the Ed situation is that Ed's contract specifies that his next fight would be against Michael Chandler," Rebney said (thanks to TheMMAReport.com for the quotes). "So Ed is now in a position where he can choose to fight Chandler, and contractually, we have to give him the Chandler fight after he beat Chandler the first time."
During the card, Will Brooks scored a split decision victory over Chandler to win the interim lightweight title. Last year, Alvarez downed Chandler to claim the title himself.
