Dana White On Chael Sonnen Firing, Difficulty With Gina Carano's Managers, BJ Penn Retirement
The boss was asked his thoughts on the recent decision by both the UFC and FOX Sports to terminate the broadcasting agreement with Chael Sonnen following Sonnen's second failed drug test. The fighter retired last month after failing the first test.
"It's never easy making decisions like this," White said. "Chael is a person I personally care about and I know a lot of people at FOX care about him too. The guy had four banned substances in his system. Four banned substances in his system leading up to a fight here in Las Vegas. It's a tough one. It's one of those hard decisions you gotta make. It was definitely a hard one. It was something we had to do."
Sonnen was the co-host of "UFC Tonight" and a key figure on the pre- and post-fight shows put on by the network. He was a three-time world title contender in the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.
White also let it be known that talks with Gina Carano to come to the UFC have hit a bit of a roadblock. After sitting down with Carano earlier this year, the UFC appeared poised to sign the movie star. Now, that might not be the case.
"I like Gina Carano a lot and she's a great person," White said. "I just have a hard time dealing with some of these Hollywood attorneys. We'll see how that goes."
And finally, former UFC lightweight champion BJ Penn will make his return to the Octagon on Sunday at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale when he takes on Frankie Edgar for a third time. Edgar owns two decision wins over Penn, who has won just once in his last six fights overall.
"This is (possibly) BJ Penn's last fight," White said. "If he wins, we'll see what he does from there, but if he loses, I will actually push for him to retire. It could be possibly watching Michael Jordan playing his last basketball game. It could be Tiger Woods' last golf game."
Penn is one of two men to hold UFC titles in two different weight classes, winning both the welterweight and lightweight titles.
