MMA Event In Brazil Canceled After Fighter Dies
Following the tragic death of 26-year-old flyweight fighter Leandro "Feijao" Souza yesterday, the Shooto Brazil 43 fight card that Souza was to appear on has been cancelled.
A member of the renowned Nova Uniao fight team, Souza died yesterday from complications related to his weight cut for the fight. Souza's head trainer and Shooto president, Andre Pederneiras, revealed this morning that the event would be cancelled out of respect and mourning for the deceased Souza.
Pederneiras posted to Facebook his condolences over Souza's passing (translated by MMAJunkie), writing, "The athlete passed away at the emergency unit in Botafogo. The reasons are not yet known to us. We would like to express our condolences to all friends and family."
Souza (5-5) was expected to face off against Gabriel Brasil (1-1). No word yet on whether or not the event will be rescheduled.
