Anderson Silva Suffers Severe Broken Leg As Chris Weidman Remains Middleweight Champ

Anderson Silva looked for redemption in the main event of UFC 168. Opposite him was the UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, who was out to prove his first win over Silva wasn't a fluke.

The most hyped rematch in UFC history saw the two start the fight in the center of the Octagon. This time, there was no showing off by Silva and they traded blows in the first five minutes. At one point, Weidman had Silva hurt and it looked like veteran referee Herb Dean would stop the fight. Silva recovered, but would barely last two minutes in the second round.

Silva landed a leg kick to Weidman's body and the challenger fell to the mat screaming. The fight was waived off and the replay showed the damage. Silva had broken his leg as doctors came in the Octagon to help the former champion. The severity of Silva's injury isn't known, but the announcers called it a career finisher.

It's the second time Silva has been defeated in the UFC as he goes to 16-2 for the promotion. Both defeats came Weidman this year. Silva had recently signed a new UFC deal for 10-fights and showed interest in a future match with Roy Jones Jr.

Weidman keeps his unbeaten record with win number 11. He returned off a yearlong layoff and the effects of Hurricane Sandy to defeat Silva for the belt at July's UFC 162. Vitor Belfort has been promised the next middleweight title shot.
