AEW's Anna Jay's Nickname Was Inspired By An NHL Legend

Of the several monikers that AEW's Anna Jay is known by, the most meaningful nickname that she has collected so far is 99. Mr. Brodie Lee assigned this number to Jay after she joined the Dark Order, and he was particularly proud of it as it was the only one that he could assign.
During a 2020 appearance, the Dark Order leader explained that the number was inspired by his passion for hockey. He said, "They are 100% assigned [...] Anna Jay was the only one that I had a hand in. She's 99 because Wayne Gretzky wore 99. He was 'The Great One,' so that was my nod to hockey."
Before Lee publicly told that story, Jay was unaware of the meaning or the inspiration behind her number, and she shared that "it's crazy and it's cool and I will keep that forever." Although she has no connection with hockey and doesn’t identify as '99' on AEW anymore, she still cherishes the nickname since it was from her beloved mentor.
