Sgt. Slaughter Tells The Tale Of Roddy Piper Being Stabbed By A Fan
By PHIL HALL
Sgt. Slaughter recalled a genuine life-and-death struggle involving Roddy Piper in the early 1980s. Piper and Slaughter were standing off-camera during a match in Raleigh, North Carolina, when they saw a man near a hallway concession stand beating a little girl, to which Piper said, “I don’t like that,” and took off to stop the man’s assault on the child.
Slaughter stated that Piper separated the child from the man, and after ensuring she was safe, he chased after her assailant. By the time Slaughter caught up to Piper, he had pinned the assailant on the ground, and two policemen came to arrest the abuser. Still, Piper insisted on speaking to the man while Slaughter noticed a bloody knife on the ground.
When the policemen finally asked why Piper wanted to talk to the accuser, Slaughter said, “Roddy took his thumb off his chest and said, ‘Because he stabbed me.’” Piper was taken to the hospital, where a doctor said, “with another quarter of an inch, he’d be dead right now.” However, the doctor stitched Piper up, and he survived.
