Why Jerry Lawler Left WWE In 2001 - And Then Came Back Soon After
By RANCE MORRIS
During his time as a commentator in WWF’s “Attitude Era,” WWE Hall of Famer Jerry “The King” Lawler married Stacy Carter, which led to his eventual departure from the WWE for a while. Lawler met Carter, better known to WWE viewers as Miss Kitty or The Kat in 1989, and quickly introduced her to the wrestling business.
Although not professionally trained, Carter won the WWE Women’s title in 1999 before her marriage to Lawler in 2000. However, Carter was unceremoniously released from the company in 2001, and fellow commentator Jim Ross noted on his podcast, it was because “the writers said, she was too hard to work with.”
Lawler took offense to his wife’s firing, which led to his departure from WWE in protest. He stayed away from WWE from March of 2001 until November of 2001 when he and Carter separated before their eventual divorce in October 2003.
