Classic WWE Intercontinental Title Belt Used At WrestleMania III Goes Up For Auction
A piece of professional wrestling history is now up for auction.
Heritage Auctions, a leading auction house for wrestling materials, has listed the 1985-1988 iteration of the WWF/WWE Intercontinental Championship Belt for public sale. As of this writing, the winning bid stands at a whopping $82,500 (not including the buyer's premium) with 22 days left until the auction closes.
The belt, crafted by Reggie Parks, was ring used and held by four WWE icons: Tito Santana, "Macho Man" Randy Savage, Ricky "The Dragon "Steamboat and The Honky Tonk Man. Savage and Steamboat famously fought over it at WrestleMania III, with their title clash still considered one of the best matches in all of WrestleMania.
"No match captures that reputation better than Savage and Steamboat at WrestleMania III," reads the item description. "On March 29, 1987, the two delivered a fast, beautifully timed contest that ended with Steamboat winning the title. Though Hulk Hogan and Andre the Giant headlined the show, Savage and Steamboat produced the match that many fans and wrestlers still remember as the evening's masterpiece. It remains widely regarded as one of the finest bouts ever staged. For fans who grew up during wrestling's 1980s explosion, this belt is instantly recognizable. It recalls packed arenas, larger-than-life characters, and champions who could truly work. More than gold and leather, it represents an era and a standard that still resonates generations later."
Santana first received the title, marked with the "WWF" logo in bright red paint, in September 1985. Five months later, Savage dethroned him as the WWF/WWF Intercontinental Champion, later carrying the belt into WrestleMania 2 and through a 400+ day reign. Steamboat and Honky Tonk Man's reigns followed, with the latter notably wearing it at the November 1987 Survivor Series event. WWE officially retired the design in 1988.
