Sami Zayn defeated Je'Von Evans to retain the WWE Championship during "WWE Raw."

Zayn came down to the ring for a promo addressing the lack of respect for him as WWE Champion, name-checking the likes of Trick Williams, who will be challenging for his title on Friday's "WWE SmackDown," as well as CM Punk and Je'Von Evans.

That prompted Evans to come down to the ring for an exchange of words with Zayn, ending with the champion trying to take his leave until he was informed by Adam Pearce that he was going to defend the title against Evans immediately.

Evans started the match off at the advantage, looking to prove a point against the veteran. He dropped Zayn with the Red Dot dropkick, going for the cover for a close two-count. He came almost as close with a roll-up attempt and a subsequent frog splash. But as he sought to finish the match, Zayn rolled out of the ring and looked to be leaving.

Penta's music played and Mr. Money in the Bank came out with a referee, backing Zayn into the ring. Evans dropped Zayn as he returned, going for the closest cover of the match. But then Bron Breakker ran down the ramp to take out Penta. Evans took flight to wipe out Breakker, springboarding back into the ring after Zayn but missing.

Zayn sent Evans into the corner with an Exploder, following up with the Helluva Kick for the winning pinfall and title retention.
