Edge Wins World Championship

We would normally put a spoiler alert since the match will air this Friday night, but since WWE made the announcement on ECW tonight, we can officially announce that Edge has moved to Smackdown and, as expected, cashed in the Money In the Bank title shot to win the World Championship.

As mentioned in the top story earlier this week, the World title situation was in disarray with injuries to the Undertaker and Mr. Kennedy (to read the article click here), and Edge was expected to win the World Championship.

It began after the Undertaker and Batista battled to a draw in their cage match when both men hit the ground at the same time. The match was said to be about 17 minutes and good with lots of heat. Due to the match ending in a draw, Undertaker was announced as champion.

After Batista left, Mark Henry's music hit and he attacked the Undertaker, including rolling him into the ring and hitting him with a big splash. After he left, Edge's music hit and he cashed in his title shot that he earned the night before on Raw. He covered the Undertaker, although the Undertaker kicked out. Undertaker then tried to sit up, but collapsed. Edge speared him and pinned him for the title, then came back and hit him with the briefcase. As has happened before when Undertaker was taking off for a lengthy period of time, druids came out and carried the Undertaker out of the ring. The Undertaker is expected to get surgery for his torn bicep tendon and won't return for another 6-8 months.

The Undertaker was originally scheduled to have a lengthy reign as champion, and in exchange was going to work more house shows and appear more regularly on television. Undertaker had gotten himself into top shape to get ready for his stint as champion. However, the injury cut his reign short.

As for Edge, this has to be a positive for his career. Edge would have spent the rest of the summer floundering on Raw as John Cena was scheduled to remain on top with feuds with the Great Khali and Shawn Michaels, keeping Edge out of the title picture (not to mention that the Cena – Edge rivalry has already been done many times). Edge was expected to feud with Randy Orton throughout the summer and then feud with Triple H when Triple H returns later this summer, and that would have most likely ended up benefitting Triple H as he would have probably went over in that feud.

With his move to Smackdown, he now has fresh rivalries with Batista, Chris Benoit and Rey Mysterio, who returns later this summer. Edge is currently expected to have a lengthy reign as champion.
