Wrestling Reporter's Journal: Go To Sleep Edition
Backstage at Smackdown/ECW last night, it really struck me how much faith the company seems to have in CM Punk to be a major headliner. It's so funny because usually WWE is so reluctant to put guys in prominent roles that they did not really have much of a role in creating.
I found Joey Styles backstage while Smackdown was taping, and he pretty much confirmed the suspicion I had. "Logic says to me, Brady, to put the belt on Chris [Benoit]," said Styles, "He's the more experienced, he's the more over, and he never really got a fair shake at the ECW title in the '90s. Yet, look at all that it would do for CM's career if he could hit the GTS on Chris and get the pinfall or submission win. Star in the making? I say his star would be now."
I knew I had to track him down personally to find out a little more, maybe get a little insight into which way executives are leaning for the match this Sunday. But I couldn't find him anywhere. I certainly hope the "CM" in his name doesn't stand for "Can't miss." Because in his case, he is not a very easy guy to locate.
I was hoping to wish him luck in his match tonight against Marcus Cor Von, but unfortunately I had to cut out a little early to hop a flight. And after reading the results from last night's show I know that my luck was about the last thing that CM Punk needed.
Tear it up on Sunday, guys. I can't be there personally but I will definitely be watching on my computer from the road.
