Our Review Of 'The Game Plan' DVD
The Rock's biggest box office hit since 2002's The Scorpion King, The Game Plan, hits stores today. You can purchase the DVD at a great discounted price from the WrestlingInc.com / Amazon.com store in the following formats: Widescreen, Fullscreen or Blu-ray. We were sent an advance copy of the DVD last week and the DVD, like the film, is a winner.
The Movie
As far as stories go, there is nothing in The Game Plan that is necessarily new. However, while formulaic, it still ends up being a very entertaining watch. Most of you know the story by now, as Dwayne Johnson plays Joe Kingman, a quarterback for the fictional Boston Rebels, a successful football team that has never won the championship. He is also a cocky bachelor who was once married.
One day, his life completely changes when Peyton (Madison Pettis) enters it. Peyton is his eight year old daughter from his ex-wife that Joe never knew about. As you'd expect, they don't hit it off at the beginning. However as time goes by, the two bond and become an important part of each others lives. Kingman learns to be a good father, falls for Peyton's ballet teacher Monique Vasquez (Roselyn S?nchez) and deals with his greedy agent Stella Peck (Kyra Sedgwick).
The movie is predictable, but works. The acting is good from the entire cast, and kids in particular will love this movie. Johnson knows his role (pun intended) and plays it well, and shows a drastic maturity in his acting abilities from his earlier films. The rest of the cast also perform well.
Bonus Materials
The bonus materials are the standard stuff you've come to expect, with a 20-minute making-of featurette "Drafting the Game Plan," along with deleted scenes, bloopers hosted by Marv Albert as an edition of "The Albert Achievement Awards," and two brief ESPN featurettes, as well as adjustable mood lighting for the menu screen. They are enjoyable, and the making-of featurette offers some good insight into some of the trials they faced while filming the movie (in particular, Johnson's knee injury which halted production for months), however I'm surprised that Johnson's biggest hit to date doesn't feature a running commentary from him. Still, the bonus features are fun and the nine deleted scenes with the director explaining why they were cut was informative.
