WWE SMACKDOWN RESULTS - JANUARY 11, 2008
Friday Night Smackdown: TV Report
1/11/08
Wilkes-Barre, PA
Wachovia Center
By Bryan Randles
-The show starts with the recap of last weeks Smackdown. They cover the beat the clock challenge match by match. Finlay over MVP, Chavo setting the new time to beat against Funaki, Batista not setting the new pace against the wrestlers formerly known as the Major Brothers. Than Undertaker failing against Henry with Matt Striker as special guest referee and ultimately Mysterio beating Edge and his heads to win the beat the clock challenge with some help from Batista and 'Taker.
-Vickie Guerrero comes out in the wheelchair that is being pushed by Teddy Long. She introducers her "long time friend" Rey Mysterio and he makes his way to the ring. Once in the ring Vickie congratulates Rey on receiving the title shot against Edge. Rey thanks her and says it's difficult for him that she is on his opponent's side. Rey says he's wanted to talk to her though and he mentions he still cares about her because of Eddie and that he's here for her. He does wonder what is up with Edge though? Vickie says she didn't come here to speak on her private life, Rey questions what's private about it considering she's making out in front of the cameras.
Rey wonders about Eddie. Vickie says Eddie is no longer with us and he loved me so much he'd want me to move on and find new love. She says she's still in her 30's and can still have more kids and that Edge is the perfect father figure. Rey objects to the idea of Edge being a father. Vicki says Rey doesn't understand Edge, to which Rey says Edge doesn't love her.
-Cue Edge's music and out he comes. Edge has heard enough of this crap and tells Rey that he doesn't know how he feels about Vicki. That his love for her is reality and another reality is after the rumble he'll still be champion. Rey tells Vickie that that is sick and maybe it's true he'll still love Vicki after the rumble, but he won't still be champion.
-Cue Chavo's music and I guess he has something to say. Chavo gets in the ring and says, first of all Rey, mind you own business. Rey says it is his business, but Chavo says that no matter how hard you try you'll never be a Guerrero. Chavo than wonders how Vickie can call herself a Guerrero, which actually gets a pop for the heel. Chavo says Vickie is disgusting and Edge takes offense. Vickie starts ranting that this is her show and she pays them, so they need to shut up. She makes a match between Chavo and Rey for later tonight and takes great joy in that.
It's time for commercial.
-Back from commercial Cole hypes the Chavo and Rey match for later tonight and mentions that Batista and Undertaker have been added to the rumble.
-Chuck Palumbo comes out on his motorcycle with Michelle McCool and they recap what happened last week in the mixed tag match they had against Victoria and Dykstra. According to Cole, Palumbo has apologized to Michelle for his actions.
-Out next comes Noble and they hype his 3 victories in a row against Chuck, mentioning that Chuck's never lost 3 matches in a row in WWE before. So they say.
PALUMBO VS. NOBLE
-The match opens with Chuck going to work on Nobles arm than hits a body slam. Noble fights back with a basement dropkick, but Chuck takes control right back. Boots to the face than he mounts Noble and drives his forearms into his jaw. Chuck picks him up off the mat than hits a short arm clothesline for 2.
After the near fall Palumbo applies a chinlock and digs his fingers into Nobles mouth. He than goes for some kind of slam, but Noble slides off his shoulders and delivers kicks to the back of Chuck's knee trying to take him down to size.
***Noble with a modified bulldog from the top than he rolls him up for 3 in 4:00. (*1/4)
-After the match Palumbo gets an evil look in his eye and stares down McCool. He backs her into the corner and she plays scared. Michelle McCool slipped out here and her entire right nipple was out. 9 pics below at the link at the very bottom of this post. The crowd chants "Chuck's a loser." Chuck ends up letting her go as Jaime acts like he's going to hit the ring to save her.
-Backstage Vickie is with Edge and Teddy, but Edge tells Teddy to get out. Vickie tells Edge how lucky she is to have him in her life. Edge says he's the lucky one to have her and their soulmates. He offers her a back massage and Vickie seems to enjoy it.
-They show Batista walking the halls and he's about to face MVP, who at the Rumble will try to end his friend, Ric Flair's career.
Commercial time again.
-Back from commercial Cole tells us Undertaker is still seething about last week. He'll face Striker and V in a handicap match later. They also remind us of Chavo vs. Rey for later tonight.
-MVP makes his way to the ring and Cole says his match with Flair at the Rumble could make his career, while ending Flair's. Coach says MVP would love nothing more.
-MVP grabs the mic and says before he faces Batista he wants to talk about his friend. He brags about all he's accomplished in the last year and says at the Rumble he'll win one more title. That being the title of the "man who ended Flair's career." MVP says he wishes Flair was here tonight, but Ric is in Japan doing "promotional work." MVP continues to run down Flair until?
-Batista's music hits and he makes his way down the ramp.
BATISTA vs. MVP
-The bell rings and it's a stare down to kick things off as they circle each other. A collar and elbow lock-up and Batista shoves MVP off. They re-circle and MVP sucker punches Batista and tells him to bring it. Batista goes for a punch of his own, but MVP ducks than slaps on a headlock and takes Batista down to the mat. Batista fights his way up and shoves MVP off, they run the ropes and Batista leapfrogs MVP than hits a clothesline. Batista slaps on a headlock of his own and takes MVP down to the mat.
-Batista off the ropes now and MVP does a leapfrog than goes down and Batista drops an elbow. MVP backed into the turnbuckle and Batista drives his shoulder into the gut. MVP gets in a cheap shot though and gets Batista down and measures him up for the boot to the head. His foot collides with the Animal's skull and he flies outside.
Time for a commercial 4 minutes in.
-Back in the ring Batista puts a boot to MVP's gut and nails a couple right hands before MVP takes him down with a drop toe hold than hits a leaping thrust kick to Batista's head. Batista fights back driving MVP into the turnbuckle, but MVP continues to battle back. He locks in a modified headlock and twists the neck, but Batista tries to suplex MVP out of it, only for MVP to reinforce his ground and brings him back to the mat. Batista using his hands and trying to push MVP off and he finally gets the move broken.
-Batista hits a clothesline into one turnbuckle than a clothesline into the turnbuckle across from the previous one. A sideslam for a 2 count, than a spinebuster. The animal is getting pumped and ready for the Batista Bomb, but MVP slides out of the ring. 'Tista goes after him outside, but MVP cuts him off at the ropes. He goes for a piledriver on the outside, but he gets back body dropped instead. Batista ended up getting his shoulder rammed into the ring steps for his effort. Both men are down outside and the ref continues his count. Both are on the apron than Batista slugs MVP and he makes his way into the ring.
***Batista wins by countout in 11:00. (**1/4)
-After the match Batista delivers a spear for good measure.
Commercial time once again.
**Hour 2 of the program returns from commercial.
-Mark Henry and Matt Striker make their way down the ring and Cole notices that Henry is so big you can't even see Striker walking behind him. They show the clip from last week of Undertaker getting screwed in his beat the clock match by Striker.
-The bell tolls, the flames arise and the crowd buzz's. The dead man from Death Valley makes his way to the ring to his usual large pop. Cole let's Coachman know that at Smackdown you don't anger the dead man.
UNDERTAKER VS. MARK HENRY & MATT STRIKER
-The match starts and Striker heads outside. 'Taker puts his fists to work on Henry's body and give him a good old fashion arm ringer. He goes old school and Striker shakes the ropes and 'Taker slips off the ropes and hits the mat. Striker goes to kick him and he sits up. Henry tries to take 'Taker to task, but he wraps his hand around his neck and goes for a chokeslam, but Striker gets him distracted although he takes a boot to the face for his trouble.
-Undertaker goes back up top and this time executes the old school walks the ropes forearm smash. Quickly after he hits the Tombstone and it's over.
***Undertaker pins Henry with the tombstone in 4:00. (1/2*)
-After the match Big Daddy V makes his way to the ring and him and Henry team up on the Undertaker. He hits a DDT on Henry though, but V is still working on him. 'Taker comes off the ropes though and hits a clothesline than sends V over the top. Mark Henry gets a chokeslam for his efforts and the ring is cleared. Undertakers music hits and Cole let's us know he's ready for the rumble. Coachman talks up his intensity and they recap the match through replays.
-Backstage Horny is trying to per-fect his arm wrestling technique. Vince McMahon comes in and tells him he's proud he's going to have an arm wrestling match. He than tells Horny to vision this, Hornswoggle wins the Royal Rumble and goes on to headline Wrestlemania. Finlay comes into the scene and makes a mention of some kind of deal he and McMahon have. Vince tells him to never bring up the deal they made. Finlay says how is he supposed to deal with 29 other men in the rumble? Vince says Fit will be in the rumble and he can watch after him.
Commercial time.
-Back from commercial it's time for the "Raw Rebound." Of course they recap the great main event from Raw where everything clicked. Find a way to see it if you haven't. I'll throw in a cheap WWE A.M. Raw plug for them tomorrow night at 2 A.M.
-After the Raw rebound is over Khali makes his way to the ring with Horny's Arm match opponent Rahjin Singh. Sorry to all if I still don't know how to spell his name. The translator gets on the mic and tells us how we all read Khali's workout report on WWE.com. He says you all read it, but he's practiced it.
-Hornswoggle makes his way to the ring with Finlay. They recap how Horny got into the rumble by teaming with Foley to beat the Highlanders.
HORNSWOGGLE vs. SINGH (Arm Wrestling Match)
-The ref goes over the rules and tells them to put their hand on the grip. Horny can't really reach the table it seems. I guess it's his arm that isn't long enough. The ref grabs a chair for him to stand on so he can compete. Horny gets set, but Singh backs out.
-They're both ready now and Singh starts freaking out and shaking. They show an object in Finlay's hand and it seems he may have the table set up to electrocute Singh. They lock up again and Singh starts convulsing. This allows Horny to win by slamming his hand down repeatedly.
***Swoggle wins with apparent help from Finlay.
-After the contest Khali gives Finlay a big boot than goes after Horny. Finlay recovers and runs him off with a chair though. Horny gets up on top of the table and celebrates.
Time for another set of commercials.
-Cole reminds us Rey vs. Chavo is coming up soon out of the break.
-Kane makes his way down the ring and gets his usual 300lb. Monster hype. While waiting for his opponent Cole and Coach let us know who is sponsoring Smackdown. I don't think any of them sponsor Gerweck.net so I'll leave that information out.
-Deuce & Domino along with Cherry make their way to the ring together.
KANE vs. DOMINO
-After the sound of the bell Kane opens up with a big uppercut that has Domino reeling. He ends up backed into the corner and Kane brings more fists than a series of clotheslines into the opposite turnbuckle. Off the ropes Kane hits a big side slam and heads up top. He hits the flying clothesline and Cole says it's like being taken out by a jumbo jet. Domino rebounds and goes up top, but Kane catches him and hits the chokeslam.
***Kane wins via the chokeslam in 2:00.
-After the match we get a video package of Eve, who if you don't recall won the Diva search contest. According to the video package she is coming to Smackdown.
Commercials!
-Back from commercials Cole and Coachman hype the rumble and WWE.com. being your source for all the rumble news you need. I'd say GERWECK.NET is the better place for that. They run down the card for the show: Hardy vs. Orton, JBL vs. Jericho, Flair vs. MVP, and Rey vs. Edge. Of course the rumble match it's self.
-After the hype for that they go back to talking Rey vs. Chavo. They show clips of their "I quit" match on Smackdown from a bit over a year ago. They mention how Chavo took Rey out for almost a year in that match, than move into clips from their "I quit" match on Smackdown a couple months ago.
And it's up next, well after the commercials.
-Rey makes his way out first and Cole talks about all the things that must be on his mind coming into this match. His title opportunity verses Edge, Vickie, and now Chavo.
-Oooh, Chavo rings around the arena and he now makes his way out. His ECW feud with Punk gets a slight mention by Cole (first time tonight), but he quickly moves on to Smackdown related things.
-Now Edge gets a round of boo's as he makes his way out to the ring. He heads to the announce table and seems like he's joining in on commentary.
REY MYSTERIO JR. VS. CHAVO GUERRERO JR.
-Coachman welcomes Edge to the table as Rey and Chavo circle each other. They lock-up and Rey ends up backed into the corner. The ref breaks it up and Chavo backs away only to go at Rey's knees and takes him down. Irish whip by Chavo, than Rey ducks the clothesline, comes off the ropes and hits a headscissors. Chavo back up and getting control again. Scoop slam by Chavo than an elbow for 2.
-Another whip from Chavo, but he ducks down quickly and Rey catches him with a boot. Rey with another boot and Chavo gets sent outside. Rey appears to go for an Asai Moonsault, but Chavo grabs him and throws him into the ring steps.
About 4 minutes in and they break for commercial.
-Back from the break Chavo has a keylock applied to Rey, but he punches out of it. Chavo cuts him off quickly and takes him back down than puts the boots to him. Chavo puts his foot to a seated Rey's neck up against the turnbuckle Chavo reapplies a keylock submission than switches sides and bridges up on the hold to get more leverage and pressure on the arm. Rey gets off the mat and starts kicking him in the knees. Rey holds onto Chavo's hand and springboards up top and goes for a flying headscissors, but seemed to loss his balance and the move got botched a bit.
-Chavo charges at Rey, but he ducks and he flies outside. Rey goes up top and hits a move that sends Chavo flying into the barricade. They get back inside and Rey hits a moonsault for 2. Chavo gets back control out of the pin attempt and goes for the 3 amigos. Mysteio gets out of it and Chavo tries to apply an armbar, but Rey throws him off into the ropes. He hits the 619 and heads up top. Mysterio hits the frog splash and gets the 3 count.
***Rey wins with the frogsplash in 12:00. (**1/2)
-After the match Edge hits the ring and attacks Rey. He starts to mount a comeback, but the Edgeheads hit the ring and cut it off. They grab Rey by each arm and Edge kicks Rey several times. Edge gets down on the mat next to Rey and holds the title belt up in front him and tells him he can't do it.
Well, that's the show.
