WWE Friday Night Smackdown Results (3/18): Christian Vs Del Rio Steel Cage, & More!
"Yes sir, we promised you a great main event."
We're coming from Kansas City, Missouri tonight, and despite what was advertised on Monday Night Raw, they announce Big Show/Kane vs Slater/Gabriel for the tag team titles for later tonight. Cole's penalty box is being assembled, and he's announced as the voice of the WWE and comes out to a lot of heat. The crowd is so loud, it's actually kind of hard to hear him.
World Heavyweight Champion Edge vs Brodus Clay (non-title match)
Edge is the first one out to a large pop. Brodus clay comes out with Del Rio and Ricardo. Clay tries a few clothes lines, but misses while Edge tries to take him down with fas punches. Clay tosses Edge to the turnbuckle and charges in but is met with a boot. Edge goes to the second turnbuckle and tries an axe handle but is caught by Clay who back tosses him over his head, much to the delight of Del Rio. Clay applies his strength and weight onto Edge while giving him an arm twist. Edge tries to power out of it but is knocked back down. Clay applies a shoulder lock on Edge until Edge tries to fight out of it. A knee to the gut and Edge is tossed into the corner. Another charge this time met with an elbow. Edge tries for a tornado DDT, but Clay pushes Edge off and charges with a clothesline. If the makers of Spiderman needs someone to play Rhino, Brodus Clay would make a good fill for that role. Clay springs off the ropes, tries to land a slap down onto Edge, but he rolled away. Edge tries to land a few fists of fury and another DDT to take the big man down, but is blocked. Edge pulls a drop toe hold tossing Clay into the corner on his knees. Edge goes upstairs, lands a cross body, and tries for a pinfall, Clay gets a big kickout almost tossing Edge outside the ring. Both are back to their feet, Clay charges but takes a shoulder to the gut. Edge slides under Clay, tries to pull a roll over, but Clay just takes a seat onto Edge's chest. Not even a one count, Edge tosses Clay off him but is out of it. Clay drags him to the corner, goes to the opposite end, charges in but Edge rolls out of the way and Clay is in the turnbuckle like a bus running into a telephone pole. Edge goes up, pulls off a bulldog, and gets "that look in his eye." It's spear time, but Ricardo gets on the ring to distract the ref, which allows Del Rio to distract Edge long enough for Clay to run him over, followed by a 2 count. Christian runs out and nails Del Rio. Clay knocks out Christian, then turns around to see Edge on his feet. He tries a clothesline, but misses to turn around and run into a spear. 1 ? 2 ? 3 and this one is over.
Winner: Edge with a spear.
Post match: Del Rio runs in, hits Edge with a dropkick and starts pummeling him. But Christian runs back in and takes out Del Rio, fighting each other over the announce table. Teddy Long comes out and announces Christian & Del Rio inside a steel cage, for later on tonight. They also announce IC Champ Kofi Kingston vs US Champ Sheamus as the next match and we go to our first commercial break.
We're back and we get a rewind of Sheamus vs Daniel Bryan from Monday Night.
U.S. Champion Sheamus vs Intercontinental Champ Kofi Kingston (non title match)
Sheamus is out first followed by Kofi who comes out to a nice pop. Sheamus is in control early, despite the loud Koki chant from the crowd. Kofi kicks and punches his way out of it, knocking Sheamus to the corner. Kofi then tries to throw Sheamus across the ring, but Sheamus turns it around tossing Kofi into the opposite corner. Sheamus charges in, but Kofi gets out of the way, then goes up top to start pounding on Sheamus. Sheamus steps forward, then drops Kofi onto the top turn buckle, stopping the momentum. Sheamus recovers, then nails Kofi with a standing clothesline, followed by a pin for a 2 count. Sheamus picks up Kofi and lands a neckbreaker on him. Another cover for a 2 count. Sheamus tries to lock Kofi a neck lock, but Kofi powers out of it. A bounce off the ropes and runs into a back elbow from Sheamus. Sheamus goes for another neckbreaker but Kofi escapes and tries to turn it into a roll up but gets a one count. Sheamus throws Kofi into the corner, charges in, but Kofi dodges and lands a kick. Kofi goes upstairs, tries for a cross body, but is caught by Sheamus who was going to ry for something, but Kofi escapes. Kofi lands a series of kicks and punches, dazes the US champ. He nails a side slam, getting fired up. He lands a moon drop, goes to the corner and starts the "boomin" the crowd, but Sheamus crawls to the ropes. Kofi sees it, tries to grab Sheamus, but gets caught on the ropes. Sheamus locks Kofi up, but is able to escape out of it. And nails Sheamus with a wicked slam, tries for a pinfall, but Sheamus grabs the bottom rope at 2 and rolls outside. Kofi jumps off the steps, going airborn on Sheamus, and nails a few fists before being thrown off. Sheamus goes to the other side of the steps, and as Kofi goes to them, Sheamus kicks them as Kofi runs into them. He picks up Kofi, tosses him into the ring, and waits for Kofi to get up, then lands the brogue kick on him, get the pinfall and we have a winner.
Winner: US Champ Sheamus with a Brogue Kick.
A replay is shown of Show/Kane vs Corre two weeks ago, as well as last week.
Backstage, we're shown Kane and Big Show. Show says to Kane to put their differences aside and take apart the Corre. He reminds Kane of when they were tag champs on how they dominated. They both try to choke slam each other, which ends with Kane laughing and saying "You complete me." Show laughs and calls him crazy. We go to another break.
Cody Rhodes vs Trent Barretta
We're back, and Trent Barretta is in the ring. Cody Rhodes comes out still in a suit, but to new music. He has a towel over his head, and with that mask on, he's looking more like the Phantom of the Opera, but sharply dressed. This isn't much of a match, its just Cody going all fury on Barretta, fists, feet, and fasemask. After two minutes, Cody gets the pinfall.
Winner: Cody Rhodes, after a knock out with a head butt.
We're shown a replay of Del Rio's attack on Christian from last September which shelved Christian for many months, and we go to break.
And we are back from break, shown another promo for HHH vs Taker at WM, with replay of the third part of HBK's interview about the match, talking about Taker.
Laycool is coming out for Layla's match, and we go to another break. The HBK interview took up a bit of time.
Layla (w/Michelle McCool at ringside) vs Kelly Kelly
Michelle is at commentary for this match as Kelly comes out to a good pop. Layla shoves Kelly and gets shoved back, pushed into the corner and gets kicked around. I like Kelly's attitude here. Layla kicks her way out tosses Kelly into the same corner, but Kelly kicks Layla, then holds Layla over the top rope with a flip of her own. Kelly stands at ringside, pulls Layla's legs out, hops back in and walks all over Layla. She bounces off the ropes, and takes it to Layla. A faceplant followed by a 2 count. She tosses Layla into the corner, tries a springboard, but runs into a double boot. Layla grabs Kelly but gets hammered. Kelly kicks Layla to the mat, goes up top, but gets distracted by Michelle at ringside, allowing Layla to take Kelly down and get a pinfall.
Winner: Layla
We're shown Slater & Gabriel coming to ringside, their match is next, and we go to break.
Back from break to another video promo of Sin Cara.
Big Show & Kane vs World Tag Team Champs Heath Slater & Justin Gabriel (Tag Title Match)
Slater & Gabriel are out first to much heat. I never noticed until now that the Tag Titles are just the two belts now. Big Show is out next to big cheers from the crowd, followed by Kane. Slater & Gabriel look intimidated, especially when Slater's pyro hits. Kane and Gabriel start things off. Gabriel gets caught in the corner, and Kane lands a few punches, then tosses Gabriel to the mat. Kane bounces off the rope and lands a dropkick, followed by a 2 count. Justin bounces off the rope and tags in Slater who runs into a fist from Kane. Slater is run into the corner and beaten around, followed by a side slam in the middle of the ring. Slater makes it to a corner, and receives a few more fists from Slater, who manages to kick out. Slater lands a few punches on Kane, who slings Slater into the corner and charges in with a boot, but Slater moves out of the way, causing Kane to get hung up on the ropes. Slater lands a couple of kicks and tags in Gabriel. Both of them start working Kane's left leg, making quick tags. Gabriel after his third tag in, goes up on to the 2nd turn buckle, but runs into an upper cut from Kane who then tags in Show who is a house afire. Gabriel tags in Slater who takes a couple of clothes lines, a back body drop, a body block into the turn buckle, followed by a shoulder block. Slater back to his feet, and gets into a choke slam, followed by a pin attempt. Gabriel pulls the ref out of the ring, which causes a DQ and this match is over.
Winner: Gabriel & Slater (by DQ)
Postmatch: Kane comes over and knocks down Gabriel before throwing him into the ring. Show picks him up for a chokeslam, but in comes Zeke and Barrett. Zeke takes out Big Show in the ring, while Barrett throws Kane into the barricade. With Kane down, it's a 4 on 1 beatdown on Show in the ring. Barret picks up Show on his back for Wasteland, but the look on his face says his back started to give out and he tosses Show to the mat. But Cole yells "Wasteland!" Barrett yells out instructions cause Kane is back on his feet. And Corre dismantles Kane at ringside, tossing him into the ring steps. Show is back on his feet, lands a slap on Slater, but is still taken down. Corre proceeds to destroy Kane with the steps. Barrett and Zeke then drop Show onto the announce table. This is looking like Nexus' beatdown on Raw from last year, when they ambushed Cena.
We're shown a replay of everything, and Todd is backstage with Del Rio for a quick interview and we go to break.
Jack Swagger vs Chris Masters
Back from break, and Jack Swagger is coming out, as Cole gives him a standing O. Masters is already in the ring as we get a replay of JR's beating on Raw. Swagger works over Masters quickly, with fists, punches, and a clothesline followed by a fast pin for a 2 count. Swagger gets Masters in an arm lock, who powers out of it and slams Swagger to the mat. He tires a master lock, almost has it placed in, but Jack backs him up to the corner to break it up, and then gets him in a brief ankle lock. Swagger goes outside to work Masters' ankles on the ringpost. He goes back inside for the ankle lock and this one is over.
Winner: Jack Swagger with the Ankle Lock
Postmatch: Cole leaves his penalty box for the first time of the night and does his own ankle lock, which he calls the AnCole Lock on Masters, saying "C'mon Lawler" the entire time. He gets a lot of heat from the crowd after this. Cole and Swagger prance around the ring and we go to a promo for Jericho on Dancing With the Stars.
We're shown Mysterio coming to the ring and we go to break.
Rey Mysterio vs Ted DiBiase Jr
A replay and we get a rewind of Rhodes' on Rey 3 weeks ago. Mysterio's music hits with a nice pop from the crowd. Ted comes out with Maryse in tow, and Cole is back in his penalty box. It starts off with a quick back and forth, Rey went up top to only be met with a standing missle dropkick from DiBiase. The corwd is chanting for the 619. DiBiase nails Rey with a vicious clothesline and locks up Rey who powers out of it. Mysterio lands one hurricanrana, tries a second, but is met with a slam by DiBiase. Rey tosses DiBiase into the ropes, hits the 619, followed by splash from upstairs, and a 3 count to win it, as Maryse walks off.
Winner: Rey Mysterio, with a 619 & a top rope splash.
We get a replay of Elimination Chamber, of Del Rio winning the chamber, followed by an ambush by Christian and a spear from Edge. And we go to another break.
We're back with a replay of Snooki on Monday Night Raw, & her encounters with Vicki and LayCool., as well as clips from outside media of Snooki on Raw. This got a lot of outside coverage, which means money and attention to Vince & WWE. THAT is why Snook is on Raw and Wrestlemania, people! They go through the other matches at Wrestlemania before the main event is started. Have to assume as all of this is being shown, the cage is being lowered. Before the next match, we get another commercial break.
Christian vs Alberto Del Rio (Steel Cage Match)
We're back, Ricardo is at ringside, and Del Rio is out in another one of his cars. He comes down to the ring, without Clay in tow. Christian is out next to a rather large pop. Christian is in the door and Del Rio charges at him, they trade blows, but it results in Del Rio being in charge early. Christian is slammed into the cage, but manages to kick Del Rio away and land in a few more punches. Christian bounces Del Rio off the ropes, and lands a back body drop. He goes to slam Del Rio into the cage, but is blocked. Del Rio takes a swing at Christian but he ducks, and goes for the killswitch but Del Rio pushes Christian to the corner, then runs in with a clothesline. Del Rio tries to sling Christian into the opposite corner, but Christian reverses it. When Del Rio hits the corner, he climbs upstairs to climb out, with Christian in pursuit. A fight on the top turnbuckle that moves to the middle of the top rope. Del Rio tries to pull Christian down back into the ring, but fails as Christian hangs on and fights off Del Rio briefly. He treis to climb out, but Del Rio stops him, gets him on his shoulders, and slams him back to the mat. While both recover, we go to break.
We're back and Del Rio is control, with a kick to Christian. He presses Christian against the top rope and lands a fist to the gut. He slings Christian off the opposite ropes, and ducks for a back body, but Christian counters with a knee. He charges at Del Rio, but gets tossed head first into the cage wall. Then Del Rio uses the bottom rope and his feet to push Christian into the fence. Del Rio slams Christian to the mat and goes for a pinfall, but gets a 2 count. Christian is in a headlock, but powers out of it for a moment, but is knocked back down by Del Rio, and starts to climb up top to get out. Christian gets up and pulls him back in the ring. Del Rio then swift kicks Christian in the left knee, and lifts him up to ram him into the cage, but Christian grabs onto the cage to block it. Christian then nails a DDT and gets a 2 count. Christian lands a couple of punches on Del Rio, then tosses him into the cage. He tries another pinfall, but gets a 2 count. Christian goes for the open door, but Del Rio grabs his ankle to stops him, only to get a few kicks from Christian, who then goes up top to try to escape the cage. Del Rio gets up, stops Christian by pulling him down, who is now sitting on the top turnbuckle. Del Rio then comes back with a flying insiguri, hitting Christian square in the head knocking him off the turnbuckle and back to the mat. Del Rio tries for a pinfall but gets a 2 count. He then goes for the open door, but Christian hooks his ankle this time. Del Rio kicks him away and actually gets to the door this time, but is once again stopped by Christian. Del Rio is hanging halfway through the door as Christian pulls him back in. Christian has Del Rio by the feet who kicks him away. Del Rio grabs Christian, holds him as he looks to the Wrestlemania sign, and goes to lock the armbar on Christian, but it gets reversed into the Killswitch. Christian goes for a pinfall, but gets a 2 count. Christian begins climbing out, but Del Rio pulls him back down, and pushes him into the cage 3 times. As Christian is bent over the middle rope, Del Rio stands on him to boost himself up to the top of the cage. But Del Rio freezes at the top of the cage due to the height which allows Christian to catch up to him. The two duke it out on top of the cage, which results in Christian getting laid out. But Christian recovers as Del Rio starts to descend. He climbs down over Del Rio and hits the floor first to win the match.
Winner: Christian, by escaping over the top of the cage.
Postmatch: Del Rio drops from the top of the cage, who appeared to have his arm caught in the top of the cage. As the cage goes up, he ambushes Christian from behind with a missle dropkick. He kicks Christian, tosses him into the ringside area where the bell is, and taunts Christian with a chair. But Del Rio's horn starts going off. Edge is in his car. He says it's a nice car, worth $250,000, and starts taunting Del Rio with it, saying it be a shame if something happens to it. Del Rio seems actually worried here. Edge pulls out a chair from the passenger seat and goes to hit the car, but Clay ambushes him from behind. Del Rio gets there quickly so he's not left out. He nails a "con-chair-to" on Edge's left arm, who is in real pain here. Officials run out to break it up as this show is over.
