More On Similarities Between CM Punk's Current Angle & 2005 ROH Angle

In a follow up to our story last night about CM Punk's comments on Twitter about leaving WWE on July 17th after the Money In The Bank PPV, we noted that Punk wrote almost identical comments when he was leaving ROH in 2005. His comments in 2005 were on his LiveJournal account, you can check out his 2005 comments by clicking here.

Once again, here was what he wrote on Monday night: "I knew I was gone at the beginning of the year. I just woke up one day and I knew. That's the way I work a lot of the time... I think it's creepy too, but it's really helpful. I knew I'd be history by July. Come say goodbye on July 17th. I promise to go out with a bang. Trust me. XxX"

Here is what he wrote in 2005: "I knew I was gone at the beggining of the year. I just woke up one day and knew. That's the way I work a lot of the time. I think it's creepy too, but it's really helpful. I honestly knew i'd be history by June. Come say goodbye on Saturday, I promise to go out with a bang. Trust me. XxX"

The ROH angle in 2005 started after Punk accepted a deal with WWE. However, after accepting the deal, Punk actually went on to defeat Austin Aries on June 18 for the ROH World Championship and started the "Summer of Punk," where he continually threatened to take the ROH title to WWE. The angle lasted throughout the summer, and Punk even signed his WWE contract on the belt. He finally defended the belt after being convinced by Mick Foley to do so, and lost the title on August 12th in a four corner elimination match to James Gibson in a match also involving Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels.

His last match with ROH was one night later, where he lost a two out of three falls match to Colt Cabana. Punk was crying after the match and was showered with streamers in the ring. You can check out video of that match below:

Of course, even though he won the ROH title and ended up leaving the promotion two months later, that doesn't mean it will happen this time. As noted earlier, The Wrestling Observer reported that there are differing opinions from within WWE as to CM Punk's status with the company. A lot of people believe that he's done, though others think he's either re-signed or is about to. We will continue to follow up on this story over the coming days.

What do you think will happen with Punk? That is the subject of our Opinion Poll on the right hand side of the page. You can also let us know in the "Comments" section below.
