Review: WWE Superstar Collection

Throughout the summer and into the fall, WWE Home Video has been releasing a new DVD series entitled the "WWE Superstar Collection." Single disc sets feature match selections of WWE stars like Daniel Bryan, John Cena, Shawn Michaels, Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton.

I was able to get my hands on the Zack Ryder and Sheamus DVDs. True WWE DVD collectors may not like these basic sets, but they remind me of the classic Coliseum videos I rented all the time as a kid. The idea is great and they can easily highlight Raw or Smackdown! Matches that wouldn't usually get a DVD release.

Zack Ryder Superstar Collection

The majority of matches on the Zack Ryder DVD are from his rise in 2011. A 2009 ECW match against Christian is one of his only earlier matches. The Ziggler/Ryder feud is featured in two matches on the disc, but really deserve to be there.

The first is from the episode of Raw that Hugh Jackman hosted. The second is Ryder's huge US Title win at the TLC PPV. Both matches have different elements to them and if Dolph Ziggler doesn't get his own release then this set is worth it alone if you're a fan.

Zack Ryder vs. John Cena in a "Special Social Experiment" match was a strange addition, but it might have been used to attract more Cena fans.

Sheamus Superstar Collection

While Zack Ryder's disc features six matches, the Sheamus DVD only contains five due to the inclusion of the 2012 Royal Rumble match. The match starts just when Sheamus is about to enter at #22 so it feels kind of incomplete, but his battle with Chris Jericho is still awesome to watch.

A huge part of Sheamus's rise in the WWE was his feud with Triple H so it's disappointing that none of that content is on here. Fans do get his first WWE Title win as a heel at the 2009 TLC event against John Cena. The match was entertaining and actually had a pretty surprising ending.

The King of the Ring final against John Morrison is another top match during his career and I was happy to see it on the DVD. I'm guessing that he'll eventually get a three disc set, so hopefully none of these matches are repeated when it's released.

When there's nothing to do, the WWE Superstar Collection is the perfect way to pop in a disc and watch a couple of matches. I really hope that WWE continues with the series and more mid-cards get focus. Dolph Ziggler, R-Truth, Cody Rhodes, Sin Cara and Santino all deserve a release.
