UFC News: Jon Jones' Next Challenger Is...
It looks like Alexander Gustafsson's stellar efforts against champion Jon Jones won't be enough to earn him a much-anticipated immediate rematch.
UFC president Dana White revealed to ESPN recently that Jones will face Glover Teixeira next, likely on the UFC's annual SuperBowl weekend show. According to White, the champion asked to face Teixeira next, but is interested in a rematch with Gustafsson following that bout — provided that Gustafsson win his next fight, which White indicated will take place in Sweden.
Gustafsson and Jones fought to a five-round decision last weekend at UFC 165, with Jones getting the nod. The general opinion of the fight world was that the bout could have gone either way and, as a result, many expected an immediate rematch. Instead, the champ will face the next man in line, Glover Teixeira. Since joining the UFC's light heavyweight ranks in May of 2012, the MMA veteran has gone 5-0, with wins over Kyle Kingsbury, Fabio Maldonado, Quinton Jackson, James Te Huna and Ryan Bader.
Prior to their match up announcement, Teixeira told UFC Tonight that he would understand if Gustafsson was awarded the rematch and that he would continue to stay active in the division if that were the case.
"I don't want to wait for the rematch," said Teixeira. "I'm not going to say he doesn't deserve a rematch. That was a great fight."
No word yet on who Gustafsson will face in the interim.
