UFC News: Welterweight Announces Retirement, Matt Grice Update, New Fights Announced
- Former UFC fighter Matt Riddle has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts competition this week. The 27-year-old posted the news to his Facebook account, citing financial issues as his reason for hanging up the gloves.
"I'm retiring from MMA today cracked my rib and can't fight sept 20, Bellator said they can't find me a fight till the next tournament and I can't afford not fighting that long and need a job, sorry if I let anyone down but it isn't paying the bills."
Though Riddle was most recently employed by Bellator, he spent the entirety of his twelve-fight career competing for the UFC. He was released from the promotion earlier this year after testing positive for marijuana twice within an eight-month period. The welterweight was slated to make his Bellator debut against Luis Melo Jr. in Bellator's 170lbs. tournament later this month when he injured his rib and retired. He walks away from the sport with a record of 7-3 (2 NC).
- Oklahoma City police officer and UFC featherweight Matt Grice (15-5) has had his bout against Jeremy Larsen (8-4) removed from the lineup of UFC 166 after suffering severe injuries from a car accident. Grice was rear-ended on Sunday afternoon in a serious multi-vehicle wreck. He sustained a head injury from the collision that required surgery and is still hospitalized. UFC 166 is scheduled to take place on October 19 at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Grice and Larsen were to compete on the Facebook-streamed portion of the preliminary card.
- Several new match ups have been announced this week. Featherweights Cole Miller (19-8) and Andy Ogle (9-2) have been pitted against one another for the October 26-scheduled UFC Fight Night 30 card. A lightweight match up between Thiago Tavares (17-5) and Quinn Mulhern (18-3) has been set for UFC Fight Night 32, which is scheduled for November 9. In women's bantamweight action, Amanda Nunes (8-3) will face Germaine de Randamie (4-2) at UFC Fight for the Troops 3 on November 6.
