Georges St-Pierre Approaching "Good And Bad" Record, Talks UFC 167 Fight With Johny Hendricks
A win over Johny Hendricks this Saturday would see UFC welterweight champ Georges St- Pierre break several UFC records. First, Rush will break his current tie with Anderson Silva for most title fight wins ever at twelve. Second, he will surpass Octagon legends Matt Hughes and Randy Couture for most UFC victories of all time at nineteen. Finally, provided St-Pierre stays fighting for at least 39 seconds, he will pass several UFC notables for most time spent in the cage.
Considering the criticism St-Pierre often takes for failing to finish fights, that final record is a dubious one. Though it alludes to his impressive tenure with the promotion, most will see it as a result of his frequency to take fights the distance. St-Pierre is certainly not ignorant to the fact; he points to the quality of his competition as the reason for his many decisions and values every minute he's spent in the cage.
"That's good and bad," St-Pierre said of the record. "I get lots of criticism for not finishing fights, but it's hard fighting the best In the world. I give a lot of credit to my opponents. It's good because of the experience I have."
Of course, none of those records will come about if St-Pierre can't make it past Hendricks this Saturday. Though the champ has proven to be too much for most all previous challengers to his title, many believe that Hendricks will pose his toughest test to date. Always honest in his appraisal, St-Pierre realizes the threat that his opponent presents. The challenges Hendricks brings to the table are certainly unique, but St-Pierre believes he has the tools and strategy to repel him from the belt.
"He has great knockout power and covers distance really well. He has great wrestling and he's very explosive. He's stocky and it's hard to train for him because he's very unique, so you can't find training partner like him," St-Pierre assessed. "But I believe I have the right formula to take care of business on Saturday."
St-Pierre and Hendricks will meet in the cage this Saturday in the main event of UFC 167, which takes place from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Make sure to check back then for our live coverage of the event, which begins at 6:30p.m. ET/3:30p.m. PT.
