Johny Hendricks Says He Beat GSP, Comments On GSP Possibly Retiring
The fight between Georges St-Pierre and Johny Hendricks was close enough that calling it a robbery is unfair. While the case can be made that St-Pierre deserved the win, the majority of viewers felt that Hendricks did enough to take the belt.
For his part, Hendricks is certainly in the latter camp. The former Oklahoma State national champion wrestler told Ariel Helwani for FOX Sports following the fight that he believes without a doubt that he earned the title. Though his words were colored with some bitterness, Hendricks vowed to use the experience to become a better fighter and not miss his chance at the belt again.
"I did beat Georges St-Pierre," Hendricks asserted. "I did deserve that belt. I won that belt. But two people didn't see it that way and guess what, I'm going to go back home. I swear to god, I'm going to get stronger, better and faster and that just won't happen again. I knew I had to beat him, and I did. He's all banged up. There's nothing I could have done better."
Adding insult to injury, St-Pierre revealed after the fight that he isn't sure whether or not he will return to compete again due to personal issues. Though Hendricks would likely prefer to fight St-Pierre again and put a stamp on a victory, he's mostly concerned with winning the title regardless of who's holding it.
"I don't care," he said of St-Pierre's potential retirement. "I want that belt. That's my belt. He knows it. I'd retire too. I wouldn't want to give it away."
UFC president Dana White remained confident following the fight that St-Pierre will return and that an immediate rematch can be worked out. Either way, Hendricks is at the front of the line when it comes the welterweight title.
