Nelson Mandela passed away today at the age of 95. Mandela, who was imprisoned for 27 years in South Africa for fighting apartheid, was the country’s first black president.

“Our nation has lost its greatest son,” said South African president Jacob Zuma during a television address. “Our people have lost a father. Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss.”
