Jon Jones Trolls Chuck Liddell, Cain Velasquez's Next Title Defense Official, Teixeira Update
- UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez will defend his title on November 15 against Fabricio Werdum at UFC 180. The title fight was announced during a special press conference, which you can watch in the video above, from Mexico City, Mexico on Tuesday, which will be the site of the card.
Velasquez (13-1) and Werdum (18-5-1) will also be the head coaches on the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America. Velasquez is currently recovering from surgery, while Werdum is coming off a victory over Travis Browne that cemented his status as the No. 1 contender.
"You know I am going to come into Mexico with a bang," UFC president Dana White said. "I am going to bring some good fights here."
The only other bouts announced for the card was that the finalist on TUF: Latin America will meet that night.
- Glover Teixeira coach, John Hackleman, has been around MMA for long enough to know when he's seen a beating. And for the first time, he saw that happen to his own fighter.
Teixeira dropped a decision to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones at UFC 172 this past weekend, leaving the fight with a damaged rib and injured shoulder. The loss snapped a 20-fight win streak for the Brazilian.
"I've never seen Glover lose a fight like this," said Hackleman, in an interview with The Pit. "I've never seen Glover bleeding. Glover hurt his right shoulder really bad in the first round. The first round. That's not an excuse because Jon hurt his shoulder. Jon hurt Glover's shoulder in the tie up on the clinch against the cage, tweaked his shoulder and he hurt it. Glover couldn't use his right hand very well. He never said he has an actual torn ligament or tendon, so we fight that out after. It was disfigured and swollen."
Teixeira is slated to have an MRI on Wednesday that should show the severity of the injury. The loss was his first since signing with the UFC.
- Jon Jones poked a little fun at two of his critics on Instagram recently, taking aim at former UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell and Phil Davis. Jones, the reigning 205-pound champion, successfully defended his title for a seventh time this past weekend at UFC 172 over Glover Teixeira.
Liddell, a member of the UFC's Hall of Fame, is a close friend and training partner of Teixeira's. He was Octagon-side for the world title fight. In the days leading up to the bout, "The Iceman" proclaimed that he could knock Jones out – in his prime. Liddell retired several years ago following a series of KO losses himself.
As for Davis, he was pushed for a fight with the champion before stepping inside the Octagon vs. Anthony Johnson. The former NCAA national champion was dominated for three rounds, dropping a decision to Johnson. He was accused by "Bones" of overlooking "Rumble" heading into his co-main event fight.
"Talking all that trash before the fight.. you mad bro?"
"Crumble me like a cookie?"
