Retro Wednesday: Which Gimmick Was Worse?

Throughout their careers, WWE Superstars have their high and low points. Oftentimes, being a professional wrestler requires going though an embarrassing array of gimmicks, just to find your niche. A long list of former world heavyweight champions as well as WWE Hall of Famers – including Sexton Hardcastle (Edge), The Ringmaster (Steve Austin), and the Diamond Studd (Scott Hall) – all had to use their patience and passion for the business to look ahead for that desirable opportunity.

Such is the case for Kane.

After already going through the territories as an eccentric assortment of characters, Glen Jacobs debuted on the main stage of the WWE in 1995. However, his gimmick was just another addition to his list of odd characters in his short tenure as a wrestler. For some reason, being a near 7-foot tall evil dentist was a one-way trip to becoming a main-event star. However, the character did not go over even close to expected, Isaac Yankem, D.D.S left much to be desired, and he only lasted a year.

Then, more embarrassment.

With the advent of the Monday Night Wars – particularly the soaring popularity of the New World Order (nWo) – Jacobs was dealt the hand of being a rip-off of Kevin Nash's Diesel gimmick in the WWE. Along with the fake Razor Ramon (Rick Bognar), the duo was intended to be a jab at Hall and Nash, who jumped ship to World Championship Wrestling (WCW). Sadly, the only thing it did was made the creative staff look like amateurs, and Good Ol' Jim Ross was caught in the crossfire.

Thankfully, that gimmick ended "quicker than a hiccup," and nearly twenty years later he (as the much more meaningful "Kane") has an opportunity to be a world heavyweight champion for the third time. While there is an incredibly small chance that he will be champion again, at least the WWE fans do not have to be forced to watch a brown-toothed dentist or a replicated trucker.

That, alone, deserves a "Yes!"
