Retro Wednesday: Will History Repeat Itself?
The night after WrestleMania 18, 2002. During a hardcore match comprising of Maven, Spike Dudley and Al Snow, Paul Heyman accompanies a beastly-statured man, who interferes in the match. After he destroyed all three participants with ease, Paul Heyman revealed him to be Brock Lesnar.
It did not take long for him to become a dominant factor and main-event star. In fact, within four months, he became WWE Champion, defeating the Rock at SummerSlam. Twelve years, 3 world championships, a Royal Rumble victory, and many notable feuds later, Lesnar faces arguably the biggest opportunity of his entire career – breaking the 21 win WrestleMania streak of the Undertaker.
Brock Lesnar is one of the only WWE superstars who has a win advantage over the Undertaker, as their previous feud in 2002 culminated with Lesnar defeating Taker in a Hell in a Cell match at the No Mercy pay per view. Moreover, Undertaker has never defeated Lesnar in a televised singles match as of yet. During their last feud, Lesnar badly damaged Taker's hand, which was a part of the angle to make him more vulnerable. However, this time, Lesnar does not have that same advantage, but is still looking to use his athletic ability to fulfill his goal of "EAT SLEEP BEAT THE STREAK."
If history repeats itself, Brock Lesnar may be the biggest threat to Undertaker's WrestleMania streak. However, there is an extra competitive edge that Taker exhibits when it comes to defending the streak, so as intimidating as Brock Lesnar is, he has 21 consecutive wins of momentum against him.
Over the years at WrestleMania, the streak has become just as important – many say more important – than the actual world title matches themselves. Can Lesnar add this amazing feat to his resume? We shall see on Sunday.
