Retro Wednesday: And The Bad Gimmicks Continue...

Since there was great feedback on the previous Retro Wednesday topic of bad gimmicks, it would be only fair to expose as many possible. There were some interesting names that were mentioned, and most of them did not have a shot at becoming successful due to an eccentric gimmick clearly shrouding any concentration on wrestling ability.

To continue the gimmick discussion, there is one person in particular that was quite agile for his size, and not the worst wrestler on the roster. However, his gimmick was so incredibly cheesy, and his in-ring ability could not come even close to compensating his character disadvantage.

So, who is this guy? The one and only... P.N. News.

In 1991, Paul Neu graced the ring of World Championship Wrestling with some shades and a microphone. In an era where odd gimmicks ran rapid, his call and response of "Yo Baby Yo Baby Yo!" almost immediately drew the interest of the crowd.

His popularity earned him a midcard feud with Television Champion "Stunning" Steve Austin. This even led to a tag team victory with Bobby Eaton against Austin and Terry Taylor. Despite an incident with another wrestler that caused his push to derail, he still managed to face Austin for the title at a Clash of the Champions event, although he lost.

Less than a year after his debut, P.N. News was released, and the crowd no longer received the treat of enjoying the lost member of the Beastie Boys.

The P.N. News gimmick may have been liked by many at the time, but now it is one of those moments in wrestling history that people may be embarrassed to admit that they were a fan. So, one that note, I will boldly step out and say that I was a P.N. News fan, until I came to my senses a very short time afterwards.

Here is your chance to admit it: Were you a P.N. News fan? Moreover, in retrospect, do you think his gimmick was good or bad? What grade would you give his gimmick?
