Retro Wednesday: Who Is The Worst Money In The Bank Winner?

Since 2005, the Money in the Bank match cemented the Hall of Fame induction of Edge catapulted the careers of Daniel Bryan and CM Punk, rejuvenated the careers of Kane, Alberto Del Rio and RVD, and gave Dolph Ziggler and Jack Swagger a small moment of superstardom.

In fact, out of the 15 Money in the Bank matches, 12 of them have led to successful cash-ins for a world title. While the Dolph Ziggler cash-in is arguably garnered the most pops, many would agree that the initial winner, Edge, has the most memorable cash-in of the series.

But what about the worst?

Well, there are three superstars that fell short of becoming champion after cashing in the briefcase. Two of them have strong cases of being the worst winners. First, Mr. Kennedy. From 2005 to 2007, Kennedy was a red-hot rising superstar in the WWE, even defeating current WWE Hall of Famers Booker T and Shawn Michaels, and future Hall of Famer the Undertaker. In 2007, Money in the Bank was a featured attraction at WrestleMania 23. Kenndey won the match, which guaranteed a world title opportunity. However, due to injury, he lost the case on an episode of Raw to Edge. After that, his career never became consistently good, eventually leading to his release in 2009.

Damien Sandow – for the most part – accounts for a WWE career that had potential in many cases, but never managed to break pass the glass ceiling. After impressive initial wins over former world champions Daniel Bryan, Christian and Kane, his singles career did not excel. Then, he partnered with Cody Rhodes as Team Rhodes Scholars, had a number of victories, but never was able to become tag team champions. The team split shortly after the 2013 Money in the Bank match. However, Damien Sandow won the match and the case, nearly guaranteeing him a world title.

Unfortunately, John Cena proved otherwise. Sandow decided to cash in his case on an episode of Raw in the fall of 2013, and was unsuccessful. Now, he is wearing nude-colored ballet gear and prancing around the ring.

John Cena's win in 2012 could also be a wild card option. However, technically, he won his match against CM Punk on the Raw 1000 episode, and it would be very difficult to say that his win was worse that the aforementioned candidates.
