- Chael Sonnen might not be planning to fight his suspension and fine from the Nevada Athletic Commission, but his presence will still be required later this month. According to a report by MMAjunkie.com, Sonnen must appear in front of the commission during a hearing on July 23.
"Mr. Sonnen must personally appear and testify under oath at the commission's July 23 disciplinary hearing," said Nevada Deputy Attorney General Chris Eccles. "He is expected to answer questions about the prohibited substances detected in his system as a result of the out-of-competition tests performed on May 24 and June 5."
Sonnen, a former three-time contender to UFC gold, failed two different drug tests given to him by the commission prior to announcing his retirement from fighting. He was expected to meet Wanderlei Silva – and later Vitor Belfort – at a card in Las Vegas, but decided to step away from competition completely. Sonnen was also released from his commentary job with FOX Sports.
- UFC prelims are coming to FOX, as baseball and soccer have left the network as the only opening for UFC on FOX 12. The event, set for July 26 from the SAP Center in San Jose, is headlined by a No. 1 contender bout in the welterweight division between Robbie Lawler and Matt Brown.
The four-fight prelim card, which usually airs on FOX Sports 1 prior to FOX events, boasts Daron Cruickshank vs. Jorge Masvidal, Patrick Cummins vs. Kyle Kingsbury, Tim Means vs. Hernani Perpetuo and Mike de la Torre vs. Brian Ortega.
Set for main card action will be Anthony Johnson-Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Dennis Bermudez-Clay Guida and Bobby Green-Josh Thomson. The televised fights begin at 6 p.m., while the online stream card starts at 4:15 p.m. ET.
