Jon Jones Offers Apology, Update, Gustafsson Wants Next Title Fight, Cormier Calls Out Champ
- Alexander Gustafsson believes that it should be himself and not Daniel Cormier who meets Jon Jones this January at UFC 183. Jones suffered a knee injury in training and was forced to postpone his planned defense of the light heavyweight title with Cormier.
Gustafsson was originally scheduled to face Jones in September, but he was forced out with an injury of his own. Now, with the bout pushed back until 2015, "The Mauler" feels he should be re-inserted.
"I just heard the news that Jones is injured and the fight is rescheduled to January 3," Gustafsson posted on Facebook. "Until then, I will be more than ready, it was MY fight to being with and I WANT the fight as the number 1 contender. End of story!!"
From reports, Cormier will remain the challenger, to which Gustafsson added "Apparently UFC thinks that acting like clowns on a press conference will hype a fight more than doing the fight of the century, that's ridiculous."
Jones earned a decision over Gustafsson last year to retain his title. Both fighters earned wins earlier to remain on track for a rematch until the injury.
- UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones has offered an apology to his fans for being forced out of a fight in September with Daniel Cormier. The championship bout has been rescheduled to January 3.
"I'd like to apologize to all the fans who were excited for UFC 178," Jones wrote on Facebook. "Earlier this week, I suffered an injury while training for the fight. I'm having surgery (Thursday) and I'm focused on recovering as quickly as possible. I look forward to getting back in the gym and defending my title on Jan. 3 in Las Vegas."
Jones is coming off a successful title defense over Glover Teixeira. He was originally set to meet Alexander Gustafsson before the Swede suffered an injury and was replaced by Cormier.
- Daniel Cormier was left with disappointment after news broke that his planned September title fight with Jon Jones would be pushed back until January. The UFC light heavyweight champion suffered a knee injury in training that will require surgery.
"When I heard that Jon was hurt and him and (Alexander) Gustafsson are now on the same schedule in order to be healthy, my first question was, 'I don't have to go behind Gustafsson again now, right?'" said Cormier, during an appearance on FOX Sports 1. "I was very concerned about that. I didn't want to lose my place in line.
"It (the postponement) can be a blessing, but I would be outside of myself to not say that I went into this fight knowing that my knee was pretty jacked up and I was gonna fight through it to get a title. I don't think he (Jones) is ducking me. I said from the beginning that Jon Jones isn't afraid of anyone?I'm saying tough it out sometimes; sometimes you gotta just tough it out and go in there and fight."
UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta assured Cormier he would still be the next challenger. The delay also allows Cormier more time to prepare, as he was stepping in on short notice.
