Jon Jones Fined $50K, Top UFC Contender Also Fined, Wanderlei Silva Banned For Life
It was an eventful day for the UFC during a meeting with the Nevada Athletic Commission. The board handed down stiff penalties to UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, top contender Daniel Cormier and the recently-retired Wanderlei Silva.
Jones was fined $50,000 – or 10-percent of his fight purse – and ordered to serve 40 hours of community service in Las Vegas. Cormier received a fine of $9,000 and 20 hours of community service.
Last month, the two had an impromptu brawl during Ultimate Media Days in Las Vegas to promote their planned September collision. However, "Bones" suffered a knee injury in training shortly after and the fight is now scheduled for 2015 and UFC 182. During the meeting with the NAC, Jones confirmed that he lost his sponsorship with Nike over the matter.
Despite losing the deal with one of the largest shoe and clothing companies in the world, Jones wrote on Twitter that he has "absolutely zero animosity (toward Nike) they've been great to me."
While Jones and Cormier avoided any type of suspension, the case was not the same for Silva. "The Axe Murderer," who sent out a video declaring his intentions to retire from the sport over his issues with the UFC and NAC, was given a lifetime ban and fined $70,000.
Silva decided not to take a drug test when the NAC showed up in at his Las Vegas gym. He was scheduled to meet Chael Sonnen in July.
