Retro Wednesday: Which Championship Has More Prestige: Intercontinental Or U.S.?
In this week's edition of Retro Wednesday, we are going to have a friendly debate stemming from a recent episode of Pancakes and Powerslams. Especially after seeing the pictures of wrestlers who have held both the Intercontinental and United States Championships, it is worth discussing which one has more prestige.
The Intercontinental Championship has been WWE's second biggest championship since its inception in 1979. As he is sure to tout to the masses, WWE Hall of Famer Pat Patterson was the first person to hold the championship, and it has been utilized to create stars ever since. Former WWE Champions such as The Rock, Steve Austin, Chris Jericho, Eddie Guerrero, Bret Hart, and Edge – among a long list of others – can say that this title helped launch their career as a singles competitor.
The United States Championship was the second most important championship for the NWA, which later carried over to WCW. The popularly recognized version was originated in 1975, and Harley Race can lay claim as being the initial holder of that title. Names such as Ric Flair, Sting, Lex Luger, Ricky Steamboat, Goldberg, and even John Cena, can attest to this championship establishing their careers, and propelling them to be top stars.
