UFC 178 Results: Demetrious Johnson Defends Flyweight Title, Cerrone - Alvarez, Conor McGregor

MAIN CARD
Cat Zingano vs. Amanda Nunes
Round 1: Zingano returns to the UFC after a lengthy absence. Lots of body movement by Zingano, but Nunes with a takedown seconds in. Nunes has top position and Zingano grabs the arm and his tightening the submission. Nunes stands and her arm his free. As Zingano is on the ground, Nunes with stiff kicks to the body. Nunes pounces with punches and Zingano is hurt. Nunes is being relentless and Zingano tries to grab the arm again but she doesn't get anything this time. Almost 50 significant shots by Nunes already. Big right hand from Zingano and she's not blocking the shots as her face swells. While on the ground, Zingano gets top position and Nunes is on her back. They stand with 30 seconds and a throw by Zingano. Zingano has full mount as the round ends.

Round 2: Zingano puts Nunes back on the canvas and they're against the cage. Zingano is looking to isolate Nunes' right arm. Instead, Zingano stands and some kicks and punches to a downed Nunes. Zingano remains in top position and she is keeping the pressure on Nunes. Not much action from Nunes in this round and she has a small cut under her eye. Zingano is going for a foot lock or toe lock. She shortly gives up top position as a result. They end on the ground with Zingano the aggressor as the bell sounds.

Round 3: They're in a clinch and Zingano has Nunes' neck. Nunes tries rolling through but no luck. Zingano has the top spot again in the center of the Octagon. Some nasty elbows by Zingano and Nunes is becoming a bloody mess. The referee has seen enough and stops this one. Zingano is in tears after the win and Nunes' face doesn't look great.

Tim Kennedy vs. Yoel Romero
Round 1: They touch gloves to start. Kennedy is on the outside and they trade a few kicks. Romero with a nice right hand. High kick by Kennedy, but it's mostly blocked by Romero. A left hand by Romero clips Kennedy, who is cut on the right side of his face. Kennedy misses a low spin kick. Several high kicks by Romero and a straight punch. Kennedy gets a takedown, but Romero is up in seconds. Romero shoots and gets a takedown, but they stand with 30 seconds left in the round. The round ends with them on their feet.

Round 2: Stiff left hand by Romero against Kennedy's head. Kick up the middle by Kennedy, but he's not landing anything huge. Kennedy goes for a takedown, but he's stopped. Romero has slowed down as Kennedy tries to close the distance. Nice uppercut by Kennedy and he still can't get the takedown. Now, Kennedy gets a guillotine choke on the ground and Romero just pops his head out. Spinning backfist by Kennedy lands and hurts Romero. Romero puts Kennedy against the cage and they're standing with just over a minute in the round. Kennedy with a huge uppercut and several more shots and he's limp against the cage. The bell saved Romero as he looked out.

Round 3: Crazy moment as the corner of Romero is still in the Octagon. They gave him at least an extra 15 seconds to regroup and Kennedy is pissed as is the crowd. Romero is able to get a left punch and a right hand, which drops Kennedy. More punches by Romero and hammer fists as Kennedy is an absolute bloody mess. The referee has to step in. Talk about a controversial minute.

Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor
Round 1: McGregor puts his hand out to keep some distance. Already some trash talk from McGregor and the crowd is so loud. As McGregor puts his head forward, Poirier with some punches. Nice swinging left hand by McGregor. As McGregor knocks Poirier on the ground, he continues with some hammer fists. A few more shots by a calm McGregor and that's it. Real quick fight and McGregor shows he's for real. The crowd is going nuts and they love this Irish fighter.

Donald Cerrone vs. Eddie Alvarez
Round 1: A head kick by Cerrone about 10 seconds in. Lots of movement, but they're being careful the first minute. Alvarez has as clinch and lots of dirty boxing. Cerrone tries to get out with a knee, but it doesn't do much. Good flurry of punches by Alvarez and Cerrone looks to have been hurt in that exchange. Alvarez doesn't get a takedown and they're against the cage. Referee warns Alvarez about holding the fence as Cerrone has a minor cut above his eye. Cerrone gets the takdedown late in the round and the bell sounds not long after.

Round 2: Alvarez's corner says don't give Cerrone any room. Lots of movement by Alvarez as he's all over the Octagon. They both look to have plenty left in the tank. Cerrone with a clinch and knee to the body. Several more knees by Cerrone and he's doing much better this round. One of the leg kicks wobbles Alvarez and his leg is starting to turn red. Cerrone just misses a huge kick. Alvarez is wincing and he might have trouble seeing. Alvarez changes stance and his movement is off. Cerrone is slowly getting the better and throwing more powerful shots as the round ends.

Round 3: Alvarez's right eye is starting to swell and he tries a takedown but to no avail. Cerrone puts them in a clinch and that's where Alvarez wants this fight. Alvarez changes his stance again. Cerrone tags Alvarez with a punch and knee. Cerrone is pacing himself and fighting smart. Head kick by Cerrone. A leg kick from Cerrone and Alvarez falls to the mat. Alvarez's leg finally gives in. Cerrone decides to jump on Alvarez with about a minute left in the fight. Cerrone won't let him stand and the fight ends on the ground. Alvarez can barely stand after the fight.

UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson vs. Chris Cariaso
Round 1: As expected, lots of movement from Johnson in the opening minute. Cariaso tags Johnson, but the champ gets a takedown against the cage. Johnson is stepping over to gain control. Cariaso looks for an armbar from his back, but Johnson quickly shakes out. They start to make it to their feet and a knee to body from Johnson. The champ lets the clinch go with a minute remaining in the round. Johnson pushes forward and Cariaso with a nice leg kick. Johnson unloads on Cariaso and just misses a spinning head kick. Johnson lands a knee to the face of Cariaso as the bell sounds.

Round 2: A nice combo by Cariaso, but he slips before being able to mount offense. The champ jumps on the challenger and he's in half guard. A ton of quick little shots by Johnson. Cariaso's right arm is trapped. He gets that arm free, but he's still on the ground. Johnson gets the left arms in a kimura and is yanking. Cariaso looks like he's in lots of pain, but won't tap. Johnson steps over and the submission is now tighter. Cariaso needs to tap before his arm is broken.
