Phil Davis Scores Big Upset At UFC 179, Calls Out Anderson Silva
Phil Davis may not have made any fans in Brazil on Saturday night, but he walked out of Rio de Janeiro with one of the biggest wins of his career as he toppled #4-ranked Glover Teixeira.
Davis was pegged as the underdog, despite having lost only twice in his 11-fight UFC career. His recent struggles against striker Anthony "Rumble" Johnson led many to think his wrestling-based offense wouldn't be enough to take down the former championship contender in Teixeira. He proved those doubters wrong.
For the duration of three rounds, Davis repeatedly took Teixeira down and landed in a turtled position while landing a series of uppercuts and knees to his opponent. Teixeira was unable to get his striking game going despite clearly being technically superior in that department. Even in round 1, Davis was crossing his feet, striking with his hands down, and abandoning his balance while throwing strikes.
Regardless, Davis walked away with a big unanimous decision victory, taking all three rounds. With this win, Davis has defeated major stars in Teixeira, Lyoto Machida, Antonio Rogerio Noguiera and Alexander Gustafsson, but now he has his sights set on another– Anderson Silva.
Davis called out the legendary middleweight after he said that people were starting to call him the "Brazilian Killer" after going into Brazil and defeating three natives. Silva was shown in the crowd playfully reacting. After the win, the #6-ranked Davis will likely hop into the top 5 at light heavyweight.
