Retro Wednesday: Worst Hell In A Cell Match Ever?

What match did you immediately think of when you saw the title? Maybe Big Bossman vs. Al Snow's "Kennel from Hell" match? Sure, that was awful. However, technically that was not billed as a Hell in a Cell match, albeit being inside a cell. So, yes, unofficially that is the worst one, but let's critique the worst actual Hell in a Cell match.

The first one that comes to mind to me happened over 15 years ago at WrestleMania XV. In the era of a dark and eerie Undertaker gimmick, even being a leader of the aptly-named "Ministry of Darkness" faction, Taker had plans to take over the WWE, despite an opposing Vince McMahon. Big Bossman, McMahon's hired enforcer, was commissioned to stand up for the boss in battle. Before the event, Undertaker spent consecutive weeks playing mind games with McMahon, gaining retribution from being Buried Alive back at In Your House: Rock Bottom in December of 1998.

At WrestleMania, the build up led to a match that left much to be desired. It didn't even last ten minutes from bell to bell, and Big Bossman was further punished after the match, being a part of some kind of symbolic hanging with the assistance of the Brood.

For this match to be in the confines of a cell, it was not very exciting. At the time, Bossman was not much of a buzzworthy name, outside of his affiliation with Vince McMahon. Moreover, the length of the match showed that there was not much interest to steal the show, and the result of the match proved that point even more.
