MAIN CARD
Carlos Diego Ferreira vs. Beneil Dariush
Round 1:
Dariush lands a light leg kick, and comes up empty on a four punch combo that Ferreira tries to counter, also coming up empty. The two feel each other out for the remainder of the first minute until Dariush throws a leg kick that is countered by a big overhand right from Ferreira. Carlos Diego Ferreira almost hits a huge head kick, and follows by trying to move forward, but can't connect with anything. Dariush gets a big leg kick, which is the biggest strike of the fight so far. Ferreira works Dariush up against the cage but has the momentum reversed as Dariush lands a nice knee to the body. Ferreira goes to the well with a head kick attempt for the fifth time to no avail, but does manage a big right hook and body kick but can't follow up. Dariush gets a takedown but almost gets caught in a leglock as the round ends.
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 Dariush
Round 2:
Ferreira opens the round by missing a highly telegraphed spinning wheel kick, as he already looks winded. Darius grabs a waistlock and drags his opponent to the ground, which is a short lived position as Ferreira works his way up to his feet against the cage. After a solid minute, the two separate and Ferreira eats another big leg kick. Ferriera is moving really slow and flat footed and pays for it by getting taken down yet again. Dariush immediately works to pass the guard, but struggles and settles for a few punches. Ferriera went for a poor omoplata attempt that was more out of defense than anything. Dariush stands up, but hops right back into Ferreira's guard and works body punches as Ferreira tries to lock down his right arm to minimize damage.
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 Dariush
Round 3:
Ferreira comes out trying to look more light footed, but still telegraphs his kick. Dariush goes for another leg kick, and doesn't set it up again. Ferreira makes him pay and backs Dariush to the wall with a series of punches. Ferreira looks like he knows he's down two rounds and goes after Dariush, who lands a beautiful uchi mata judo throw. Ferreira gets back up, but is promptly returned to his back by Dariush, who looks content to spend the rest of the round in top control. Dariush throws several elbows in Ferreira's guard to stay active. Dariush keeps his posture down in order to stave off any submission attempts before moving into half guard, then side control, and continuing his domination. Ferreira works his way up to a knee but Dariush holds on to a waist lock and throws a nice knee to the face as Ferreira gets up. The fight ends with Dariush in control. It seems as if the late notice was too much to overcome for Ferreira.
Wrestling Inc scores the fight 10-9 Dariush, and the fight 30-27 Dariush
Official Result: Beneil Dariush defeats Carlos Diego Ferreira via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
#8 Women's Bantamweight Bethe Correia is shown in the crowd. The announcers note her desire to fight champion Ronda Rousey, and her recent war of words with former Strikeforce Champion Miesha Tate.
Lucas Martins vs. Darren Elkins (#13 Featherweight)
Round 1:
Elkins lands a punch and leg kick, before quickly going after Martins with a single leg takedown. Martins is quick to get back to his feet, using the cage. He's really making Elkins work for the takedown, which is unsuccessful as the two go back to the middle of the cage. Martins hits a couple of leg kicks while Elkins answers with counter straight rights that miss. Elkins goes for another two take downs that Martins easily defends. Elkins is leaving his chin straight up in the air as he throws half hearted strikes, obviously hoping to set up a takedown. Almost on cue, Elkins dives in but can only work Martins against the cage before landing a couple of punches as they break. Martins shrugs off another takedown and Elkins hits a good body kick, followed by a leg kick and a hook. Despite landing a few shots on the feet Elkins dives in three more times within a 15 second period, and still can't find success with the takedown. Elkins closes the round going for at least his tenth takedown, and Martins defends.
Wrestling Inc scores Round 1 for Darren Elkins 10-9
Round 2:
Martins hits a good right hand to open the round and ends up having to try to stifle another Elkins takedown. Finally Elkins starts working strikes against the cage when he realizes he wont land the takedown. Elkins isn't connecting hard, but he's racking up points before Martins separates. Elkins' body punches have no zing on them, and Martins is showing them no respect as he hits a big body kick. Not surprisingly Elkins goes right back to the cage clinch. Elkins returns to the cage strikes, and Martins gets in a nice knee of his own but can't seem to get off of the cage. The two have a quick exchange that sees Martins hit an uppercut and left hook, and Elkins with a straight. Martins connects with a big punch, and sends Elkins back into the cage as he tries to recover. Quickly after, Elkins back in control. He keeps letting go of Martins' legs, hitting a few shots, and then grabbing the clinch again. This is how the round ends.
Wrestling Inc scores Round 2 for Darren Elkins 10-9
Round 3:
Elkins tries takedowns to start the round but eats two big knees from Martins. Elkins is seriously probably approaching some sort of takedown attempts record at featherweight during this fight, as he's tried well over 20. Either way, he gets caught with another knee while he has cage control and gives up the position. This lasts all of twenty seconds, as the two end up right back against the cage. Martins lands a knee here and there and the crowd is booing Elkins unmercifully. The ref finally splits them up, but Elkins immediately pushes Martins right back there until the ref splits them up again. The crowd is hating Elkins big time going into the final minute, and he answers with more cage control. This is how the fight ends, and garners boos from the crowds.
Wrestling Inc scores Round 3 for Darren Elkins 10-9, and the fight for Elkins 30-27
Official Result: Darren Elkins defeats Lucas Martins via split decision (30-27, 30-27 Elkins, 30-27 Martins)
The 30-27 scorecard for Martins may be among the worst in UFC history.
Fabio Maldonado (#15 Light Heavyweight) vs. Hans Stringer
Round 1:
Stringer shoots a quick takedown and ends up in the half guard of Maldonado just seconds in to the fight. The Brazilians fans in attendance are not enjoying the wrestling tonight. Stringer hits a few knees and tries to work into mount as Maldonado is offering no offense and very little defense off of his back. Maldonado looks content to wait for a stand up as he's not trying to regain his guard or anything of that nature. Stringer postures up and tries to throw a few punches but they don't get much behind them. Instead he switches to elbows, which meet much more success. Halfway through round 1, Maldonado has landed absolutely no offense. Stringer tries to get mount, but Maldonado rolls through and Stringer gets back in half guard. Maldonado works his way out of the back and gets to his feet but trips and ends up with Stringer back in his guard landing body punches to end the round.
Wrestling Inc scores the round for Hans Stringer 10-9
Round 2:
Stringer hits a big right, the only punch to land in a combo to start things. This pushes Maldonado's back to the cage, but Fabio breaks free. Stringer comes over the top of the jab of Maldonado and lands a right. Stringer is looking slowed this round and Maldonado taunts him by slapping his leg, inviting kicks and takedowns. That probably wasn't a good idea because Stringer shot a double leg and put Maldonado on his back about 15 seconds after that. Maldonado shucks Stringer off and ends up on top in Stringer's guard pounding away. The Brazilian crowd is going crazy for Maldonado. Maldonado stands in Stringers guard and lands heavy punches as Stringer tries to cover up. Maldonado really starts pouring it on in half guard and referee Marc Goddard stops the fight! Big comeback win for Maldonado as Anderson Silva jumps on top of the cage to embrace him and celebrate the victory.
Official Result: Fabio Maldonado (#15 Light Heavyweight) defeats Hans Stringer via TKO (Ground and pound Strikes) at 4:06 of Round 2
Maldonado's light heavyweight winning streak is now at four, which is second longest in the UFC's 205 pound division after champion Jon Jones' streak of 11. The UFC production truck also hilariously screwed up Fabio Maldonado's Twitter handle, by putting "@RyanBader" on the screen.
Phil Davis (#6 Light Heavyweight) vs. Glover Teixeira (#4 Light Heavyweight)
Round 1:
Phil Davis aggressively shoots in for the takedown, but Glover stops it. Shortly after Davis works Teixeira against the cage, which Glover also escapes. Davis is really respecting the power of Teixeira, and with good reason. Davis continues to circle away and lands a nice right straight of his own in the midst of a lot of sloppy punches. Davis hits a good front kick to jab combo and goes right back to working for a takedown. Teixiera attempts a switch but still ends up trying to fight off the takedown. Davis finally gets Glover down and ends up throwing uppercuts with Teixera turtled up. Davis is landing heavy shots from here. Teixeira illegally uses the cage to aid in getting up and is warned by the ref for doing so. Davis drags Teixera back down and continues throwing strikes against his turtled up opponent.
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 for Phil Davis
Round 2:
Glover comes out swinging but gets taken down. Surprisingly, Teixeira reverses momentum and ends up on top, but gives it up to go back to the striking game. Davis shoots in and Glover goes for a guillotine which ends up costing him when Davis immediately slips out and goes right back to turtling Glover up. Teixeira works his way back up to his feet and Davis is stnading there with his hands down, crossing his feet, and coming off his back foot when throwing strikes. It's two different kinds of strikers in there. Mario Yamasaki calls for a stop in the action to cut a piece of tape off of Davis' glove, and Glover retreats to a neutral corner and rests. Teixeira is trying to land big punches but keeps catching air when Davis retreats, abandoning all defense in the process. Glover goes after another big combo but gets taken down to end the round.
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 for Phil Davis
Round 3:
Texiera opens with a good left hook but Davis drives right through and puts Glover on the wall, albeit only for a few seconds. Davis dives right under some wild punches by Teixeira and gets Glover down. Davis easily moves to mount but Glover scrambles out. Davis lands some good knees from the side mount and turtle position, and it looks like Teixeira has nothing for Davis. Glover gets back up and actually ends up on top of Davis for a few seconds. Davis reverses momentum and the two go back to their feet. Davis is clearly tired, and relentlessly pursues the takedown, which he gets. The fight ends with Davis attacking Glover, who is turtled up– the image of most of the fight
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 for Phil Davis, and 30-27 Davis for the entire fight
Official Result: Phil Davis (#6 Light Heavyweight) defeats Glover Teixeira (#4 Light Heavyweight) via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)
Davis now has only two losses in his 12 UFC fights, which is a staggering total. He should crack the top 5 in the UFC rankings with this vicory. Davis says he wants to fight Anderson Silva next, since fans call him "The Brazilian Killer."
UFC Featherweight Championship
Jose Aldo (c) vs. Chad Mendes (#1 Featherweight)
Round 1:
Mendes applies pressure early, going after Aldo with a leg kick. Aldo connects with two big four punch combos, due to Mendes not setting up his kicks. Mendes catches Aldo with a big left hook that momentarily drops Aldo. Mendes looks like he gained some confidence from that shot and gets inside more. Aldo hits a leg kick, but Mendes doesn't back off, landing one of his own. Mendes catches a body kick and counters with a good straight. These two are both standing int he pocket going at it. Mendes is landing some good left hooks but gets countered by Aldo, to the joy of the crowd. The two are trading punches, with neither man gaining a clear advantage. An eye poke from Mendes stops the action as a doctor has to check Aldo's eye. The doctor gives clearance, but Aldo gets an opportunity to rest. Aldo hits a knee but Mendes takes him down, but only for a second. Aldo gets a huge left hook that rocks Mendes! Aldo in mount but Mendes gets up. Aldo hits two big punches way, way after the first round buzzer, and they hurt Mendes.
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 for Jose Aldo
Round 2:
The crowd is going wild as the two start the second round. Mendes looked really hurt by those late punches at the end of the first round. Action is stopped again as Aldo is hit low, although this break could benefit Mendes much more due to the punishment he took in the first round. Mendes slips after a head kick attempt but recovers quickly. Mendes laughs off a leg kick attempt from Aldo and throws a good one of his own. Aldo lands a few good jabs, and Mendes answers with a body kick. Aldo goes after Mendes and is countered, but then hits a big body punch. Aldo goes after a big head kick, but it's blocked. Mender closes the round with a good series of lefts, for a close second round.
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 for Chad Mendes
Round 3:
Mendes attacks Aldo right after touching gloves, and Mendes pokes Aldo in the eye again and is in danger of a point deduction at this point. Mendes connects with a big left hand, but it serves only to upset Aldo who is getting really aggressive. Big left hook from Aldo, but Mendes stay in his face and succeeds with a leg kick. Mendes has completely abandoned the wrestling game, or so it seems. Mendes hits a huge uppercut that staggers Aldo, and Aldo slugs Mendes right back! Aldo is all over Mendes! Mendes shoots for a desperation takedown but Aldo defends it, before getting right back up and dumping Aldo! Aldo gets back to his feet, but Mendes holds on to the waistlock and knees Aldo in the leg. Big, nasty foot stomps from Mendes. They're on the cage and Mendes says something, which causes them both to laugh. A weird way to end an awesome round.
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 for Jose Aldo
Round 4:
Aldo claims Mendes poked him again, but Marc Goddard isn't buying it. Mendes lightly hits a head kick, followed by jab and a hook. Aldo then tries to sell that he got headbutter, but again Marc Goddard doesn't bite on it. Aldo is bleeding badly out of his right eye but still lands a good straight. Great left body hook, right hook combo by Mendes, which are the best strikes of the round thus far. A good combo by Aldo and he just misses a big strike. Mendes with a good hook to end the round. A very close round, could go either way.
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 for Chad Mendes
Round 5:
Mendes hits two left hooks to open the round. Mendes shoots in and gets a good double leg and takes Aldo down. Aldo tries to work his way up, and finally gets to his feet. Big two punch, knee combo from Aldo leads to Mendes shooting in, but Aldo winding up on top. Mendes gets back up and hits a body punch followed by an uppercut. Aldo is looking tired, but looks can be deceiving. Both men with their hands down, but Mendes hits a lead left hook and a takedown attempt that gets shrugged off. Mendes goes for a knee that Aldo says hit him low, but again Marc Goddard says no. Aldo has been fouled plenty, but has also tried to milk several that clearly weren't fouls. Ten seconds left and the two slug it out to finish the fight. A whole lot of really, really, close rounds. Could go either way.
Wrestling Inc scores the round 10-9 for Jose Aldo, and the fight 48-47 Aldo.
Official Result: Jose Aldo (c) retains the UFC Featherweight Championship over Chad Mendes (#1 Featherweight) via unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46)
After the fight Jose Aldo says in the featherweight division he's the King, Chad Mendes is the prince, and Conor McGregor is the joker. Chad Mendes also talks trash about McGregor after the fight.
