Flashback Audio: DDP Talks Randy Savage Putting Him Over, Savage Taking The Diamond Cutter
Above is audio from an WrestlingINC.com's interview with Diamond Dallas Page regarding a variety of topics, including his work with the late Randy "Macho Man" Savage when they both worked for WCW together. We are posting interesting clips and stories from our interviews to our YouTube channel, so please take a moment to subscribe at youtube.com/WrestlingINC1.
Discussing Spring Stampede '97, Page recalled that there wasn't a firm ending heading into the pay-per-view and that WCW had largely settled into finishes in which NWO members would predictably storm the ring. He said that the PPV's finish was ultimately decided upon by Savage at a match the Friday before the event when Savage told Arn Anderson?who was working backstage for WCW at the time?that he wanted to take a Diamond Cutter from DDP to close out the evening's house show.
"I'll never forget it," said Page. "Arn came in and said, 'So Mach, what do you want to do tonight?' ?and he (Savage) goes, 'I think I want to take the Diamond Cutter tonight.' And both of us just about fell over." Page said that his back-and-forth battle with Savage that night was received well by fans at the show and when he finally hit Savage with his signature move and followed up with a cover, the place went wild.
"There was a moment of silence because I don't think they could believe it, and then it really blew up," he said. "And while we were laying there ?I felt like the cone of silence was lowered over us in the middle the fans going crazy and I head Savage go, 'Well, I guess we have our finish for Spring Stampede!' He wanted to here how the fans were going to buy it."
