Seth Rollins Talks Convincing Vince McMahon Into Nixing The Shield's Breakup
The breakup of The Shield has turned into one of the biggest story lines of the year. Had the three members had things their way, they may still be together. Seth Rollins talked about putting the kibosh on the split recently on Chris Jericho's Talk Is Jericho podcast.
The group was slated to be split up early in 2014, as the three had been showing dissention. During the Royal Rumble, Roman Reigns eliminated both Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose, and the faction seemed poised to head for a split.
They were told by officials that the breakup was set to happen, but the team didn't accept it.
"We said no, we stopped it," Rollins said. "One major time for sure. They wanted us to be prepared for that, but we're not cowardly heels. People like us. We put a huge kibosh on it."
Seth Rollins said that the group put a stop to the idea because all three of them felt as if there was a major babyface run for The Shield in six-man tag matches.
"In this company no one had really cornered the market on six-man tags," Rollins said. "As an attraction, the six-man match had never been an attraction here. We had that six man thing down. We had a pace that catered to our fans. They went with it (the babyface run) for a little while. We talked to them (Vince McMahon) and got it settled."
Rollins and Ambrose saw the writing on the wall that Reigns had been positioned to be a major star, but said that the two made sure they wouldn't be lost in the shuffle. With the roster missing the likes of Brock Lesnar, CM Punk, Rey Mysterio and Daniel Bryan, the trio were booked to eventually split anyway in order to add more depth to singles programs.
Rollins also talked about winning Money in the Bank, having to carry the briefcase around in public, and how he got started in the business. You can listen to the full podcast here.
