It was officially announced today that Floyd Mayweather Jr. (47-0) will face Manny Pacquiao (57-5-2) on May 2nd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, NV. The bout will unify their respective welterweight titles. Mayweather announced the fight on his Shots account today, writing:
“What the world has been waiting for has arrived. Mayweather vs. Pacquiao on May 2, 2015, is a done deal. I promised the fans we would get this done, and we did. We will make history on May 2nd. Don’t miss it! This is the signed contract from both fighters.”
The fight will undoubtedly shatter all current combat sports records. The current pay-per-view record is 2.4 million buys for Mayweather’s bout against Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, while the all time gate record is $20,003,150 for Mayweather’s fight against Canelo Alvarez in 2013.
“I am very happy that Floyd Mayweather and I can give the fans the fight they have wanted for so many years,” Pacquiao told Yahoo Sports. “They have waited long enough and they deserve it. It is an honor to be part of this historic event. I dedicate this fight to all the fans who willed this fight to happen and, as always, to bring glory to the Philippines and my fellow Filipinos around the world.”
