Georges St-Pierre Talks Leaving MMA, Anderson Silva's Failed Drug Test, PEDs, UFC's Offers
With the UFC experiencing a giant pay-per-view success in January, the drug issue within the company has cast a huge shadow over the sport. Former UFC Welterweight king Georges St-Pierre has re-emerged with somewhat of a halo over his head, as he left the sport due to moral issues with the drug testing policies.
GSP appeared on The MMA Hour today to talk about his exit from the company, noting that UFC didn't support his wishes for independent testing ahead of his fight with Johny Hendricks.
"I was very angry. I don't want to give the UFC problems, I want to elevate the UFC, I'm a part of the UFC. I think they have to do better testing. They should take the stand, not another organization or Bellator. That will make them look bad," St-Pierre said.
UFC reached out to GSP recently, asking him to fight on their upcoming show in Montreal. The 33-year old St-Pierre declined, stating he wasn't ready to make a return.
"I never say never, but now is not that time for me. I'm busy with other stuff too. I'm very happy. If I still feel the itch maybe. They're trying to clean up the sport, but there's a lot of room for improvement. It's not where it needs to be," said GSP.
St-Pierre tore his ACL for the second time last year, which put a halt to any talks of a quick comeback. Still, many called for a super fight with Anderson Silva. GSP, who was always hesitant, was offered the fight recently.
"I said no (to the Silva fight), and then the whole (PED) thing came out and I wasn't interested."
Despite the repeated drug test failures that have rocked the MMA world, St-Pierre said that it wasn't shocking to him. Until a drastic change is made, it doesn't look like the former Welterweight champion will be coming back.
"I'm not surprised about the big names and numbers. I knew it. If I want to return, I need my fight to be tested by an independent company like VADA. I don't need to fight or put my life in risk. I'm wealthy and healthy. I like the competition. It's not worth it to me."
