Top 10 Welterweights Clash In UFC 183 Co-Main Event, One Is Leaving The Division
After showing up nine pounds overweight, undefeated prospect Kelvin Gastelum suffered his first career loss at the hands of an angry Tyron Woodley at UFC 183.
The first round was uneventful, drawing major boos from the Las Vegas crowd. Tyron Woodley took control in round two, scoring with a major series of punches. After a tight but lackluster first round, things went into the third dangerously close.
The two traded momentum after Woodley opened up a cut over Gastelum's left eye, but Gastelum refused to give up. Woodley tried to work over the cut, but couldn't accomplish much outside of a few counter punches. Neither competitor connected with much in the third round, and after fifteen minutes it was a virtual toss up with the nature of MMA judging.
In the end, Woodley walked away with a split decision victory, winning 29-28 and 30-27. This gives Woodley his fourth win in five fights, putting the third-ranked welterweight among names like Hector Lombard, Rory MacDonald and Johny Hendricks in title contention.
For Kelvin Gastelum, he'll be moving up to 185 pounds. It's hard to not believe that the flu and terrible weight cut didn't have an effect on the fight. He's experienced at 185 pounds, having defeated Uriah Hall and winning The Ultimate Fighter.
"We broke him down, used a scouting report," Woodley said. "I knew he could take a punch, but didn't want to get in a brawl."
Despite Gastelum missing weight by a huge margin, Tyron Woodley says he's going to refuse to take a percentage of Gastelum's purse as mandated by the athletic commission. He said that he's cried over not being able to pay bills, and can't do that to someone else.
"I knew it was a split decision," Woodley said after the fight.
