Paul Heyman On Interacting With Fans, If Older Managers Could Do What He Does, His Promos, More
Paul Heyman was a guest today on 107.9 The End this week to promote the Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns match at this Sunday's WrestleMania. He also speaks about managers of years past, his promos, and interacting with fans. Here are the highlights:
* Heyman says he likes to convey his message in as few words as possible.
* He says he has the easiest job in the world, because he just has to talk about someone who is authentic and legitimate. Heyman notes that being authentic is important to this role and the WrestleMania main event.
* Heyman says that the level of interactivity with fans can be important for characters. Heyman introduces himself each time he comes out so everyone watching for the first time and he wants people to get his message. He says he can't shake everyone's hand, but he does it in mass.
* Heyman talked about being interactive in his promo a few weeks ago when a fan called him out about not mentioning Andre as an opponent Reigns could beat. Heyman said he didn't include Andre the Giant because he was dead. He said he felt the guy had a good point, so decided to interact with him.
* Paul Heyman says that he has to interact and win each time and stay on topic. He says that if he does it and loses or gets off topic, that he'll no longer have the luxury of interacting in his promos.
* Heyman brings up Will Smith's drawing power being able to dictate terms. He says that Will Smith movies aren't opening at #1 anymore, so he can't dictate terms. Heyman mentions that if he loses and screws up, then he won't be able to do the things he wants on TV.
* The host asks what the likes of Fred Blassie, Lou Albano and Grand Wizard would think about his promos. Heyman says they would ask him to wait while they went and took notes.
* Heyman reiterates that he isn't a manager, he's an advocate. He carries the message of his client, but doesn't manage him and doesn't think he could.
* Heyman isn't sure that the old managers could stand in the ring for 15 minutes and sell a match. As an advocate, he has a better opportunity to do that.
* Heyman says WWE is a global television show, and millions are watching his interviews. He views it as a huge opportunity to convey his message. Every second is valuable.
