UFC Fight Night 62 Results: Demian Maia Dominates, TUF 1 Veteran Likely Has Last UFC Fight, Bonuses
UFC Fight Night 62 from Rio De Janeiro is in the books, and despite it not being the most glamorous of cards, it gave us a glimpse at several prospects, and bid farewell to pioneers.
The card was main evented by 37-year old former title challenger Demian Maia grappling his way to a victory over the previously undefeated Ryan LaFlare. Maia set the tone early with takedowns that continued straight through round four.
LaFlare showed some fight in round 5, stifling several takedowns and landing the occasional strike, but ultimately couldn't overcome the four rounds of damage. Maia is nowhere near a championship opportunity at this point, but has carved out a place as a top UFC gatekeeper with a spot in the top-10 welterweight rankings.
It appears Ultimate Fighter season 1 veteran Josh Koscheck is on his way out of the UFC as he dropped his fifth consecutive bout to the always exciting Erick Silva. Koscheck was rocked several times before finally being put away, giving Silva his first back-to-back wins in his UFC career. This was the last fight on Koschecks UFC contract, and didn't do himself any favors with the loss. It's likely that Bellator MMA will still make him an offer given his name value.
Top 10 Women's Bantamweight fighter Amanda Nunes made quick work of women's MMA pioneer Shayna Baszler in a one round drubbing. Nunes attacked the braced leg of Baszler on her way to a first round TKO. Baszler hasn't looked the best since signing with UFC, despite being a top training partner of champion Ronda Rousey. Like Koscheck, Baszler will likely also get offers from Bellator and Invicta FC.
For the fourth straight event, no fight of the night was awarded. The UFC instead opted to go with four performance bonuses of $50,000, which went to Kevin Souza, Godofredo "Pepey" Castro, Fredy Serrano and Gilbert Burns. It was also announced that Amanda Nunes and Erick Silva would be "taken care of" financially.
