The rest of the fight was a story of exhaustion for Johnson, who would fight off the occasional take down and land a big strike, but ultimately be put on his back again. Johnson did stave off a double wristlock attempt from Cormier, but ended up getting split open by Cormier elbows late in round 2. The round was so dominant for Cormier, that two judges scored the round 10-8 for DC, putting him ahead on the cards.

Round 3 saw more wrestling from Cormier, and a defeated Johnson giving up his back. Daniel Cormier locked on a rear-naked choke after landing a few strikes, and earned a submission victory. Johnson had looked ready to call it a night earlier int he round, as the grinding style of Cormier wore him down. After the fight, Johnson placed the championship around Cormier's waist.

When Joe Rogan interviewed the new champion, his words were few, simply saying "Jon Jones, get your sh-t together, I'm coming for you." Jones, currently suspended, surrendered his UFC Light Heavyweight Championship last month, allowing Cormier to take his place. Jones also defeated Cormier in January.

For now, Ryan Bader looks to be the number one contender. Alexander Gustafsson is still coming off of a loss and is injured, and Ovince St. Preux is still padding his resume. The original main event for UFC Fight Night: New Orleans could end up headlining a PPV by the year's end.
