UFC 187 Media Conference Call Highlights: Daniel Cormier, Rumble Johnson, Chris Weidman, Vitor
Wrestling Inc was on the UFC 187 media conference call, which was promoting the huge card that features two championship fights. Daniel Cormier, Anthony "Rumble" Johnson, Chris Weidman, and Vitor Belfort were all on the call, as the big event is just a week and a half away. Here are the highlights:
* Daniel Cormier saw a lot of things that he needed to correct over the fight with Jon Jones.
* Anthony Johnson is upset that Jon Jones isn't there to defend his championship, but he'll wait on Jones and face him when he's back
* Weidman said there was a point that he didn't think the fight would happen. He said an interim title was almost introduced.
* Vitor says he only worries about things he can't control, and he can't control injuries. He says this fight will the best in Middleweight Championship history.
* Cormier says he thinks Jon Jones will come back. He wants Jones to come back because he wants to fight Jones, but isn't going to beg him. Johnson echoed his response.
* Johnson Johnson says this is DC's 2nd chance at a title shot and his second chance in life. He says his sparring partners went from 6 foot four and above to 6 foot and under in terms of fight prep. I had to sharpen up some tools.
* Weidman says he has to 'out smart' Belfort. It comes down to who is going to be trickier in the fight.
* Cormier says Jon Jones casts a big shadow on the division. He understands why people question why he's in the title fight because he just lost. He says that Johnson is only fighting for what he was promised after beating Alexander Gustafsson.
* Anthony Johnson said that maturity is the reason for his career resurgence. He says whoever wins the title is the best, not the paper champion. He says he and DC aren't chumps. He wants people to give he Cormier the respect they deserve.
* Daniel Cormier and Anthony Johnson both say that Jon Jones should get a title fight when he returns. Both say they don't know if he'll want a title fight or a tune-up first.
* Vitor Belfort isn't surprised that he still got the title shot after everything that happened.
* Cormier said the promotion for the Jon Jones fight wore him down. He says he's ready for this fight, and likes Anthony Johnson personally.
* DC: I left the Octagon after Jones healthy. I didn't get cut up. I think I had a bloody nose. That's extent of my injuries.
* Cormier: Would it help to beat Jones? Yes, to change public perception, but people are going to believe. Johnson again agreed.
