UFC Fight Night 65 Results: Major Heavyweight Fight, Finishes Galore, Hair Vs. Hair Fight Proposed

UFC made a long awaited return to Australia Saturday night, and despite a card chock full of perennial losers, the night's main event featured a Heavyweight bout worthy of top billing.

Local favorite Mark Hunt squared off with fellow top-5 Heavyweight Stipe Miocic in a highly important fight in the division. Miocic utilized his jab and wrestling (both of which may be the second best in the division respectively) to take the first two rounds from Hunt. Despite looking exhausted early, Hunt clocked Miocic at the end of round 2.

In round 3, Miocic really started punishing Hunt on the ground, but the veteran refused to die. After three minutes of punishment, Hunt made it to his feet, but was quickly taken down. The ref threatened to stop the fight several times in the third, but somehow Hunt survived and made it to round 4.

Round 4 saw much of the same, with media, fans, and Dana White himself pleading for the fight to be stopped. Mark Hunt had other plans, however, and got back to his feet with a minute left in the round. After the round finished, even the ringside doctor warned the referee that he may need to stop the fight. After a repeat in round 5, The fight was stopped with two minutes left. Miocic's strike total of 361 is a new record for a UFC fight.

Miocic may very well be next in line for a title shot. Fabricio Werdum and Cain Velasquez are set to meet next month, with it being Velasquez's first fight in over twenty months. If Werdum were to win, Junior dos Santos would most likely get the next shot, but he's sidelined following a knee surgery earlier this year.

In the co-main event, 24-year old New Zealander Robert Whittaker earned the biggest victory in his UFC career, a 44 second KO over #14-ranked Brad Tavares. This was Whittaker's third victory in a row in the UFC, and he improved to 5-2 in the UFC.

Perhaps the most interesting moment of the evening was "Smilin'" Sam Alvey extending his winning streak to three and laying down an unusual challenge. After his win over Daniel Kelly, Alvey challenged Elias Theodorou to a rare "hair vs. hair" match in MMA. Alvey has continued to win fans over with his personable interviews and exciting fight style.
