CM Punk Talks Dusty Rhodes Passing, Keeping In Touch With Him After WWE Departure

CM Punk appeared on the Anik-Florian podcast today to discuss how his MMA training has went, as well as other topics. During the broadcast, host Jon Anik asked Punk if he saw WWE's tribute to Dusty Rhodes, and his thoughts on the fallen superstar.

Punk said that he didn't see the tribute as he watches Game of Thrones on Sundays, but expressed his love for "The American Dream."

"I loved Dusty and Dusty loved me. For some reason, early on in my career I was branded an old soul and I had a lot of old timers tell me 'You should have been born 20 years earlier, you would have been great in my time,'" Punk said.

Punk said that the relationship he had with a lot of old timers stuck with him even after the wrestling business. He noted that he and Rhodes kept in contact after Punk left the WWE in January 2014, and the relationship between he and WWE soured.

"I developed a rapport with guys like Harley Race, Dusty Rhodes. A lot of these guys like Dusty, got hired with WWE and he always went to bat for me. I wrestled Dusty in one of my last matches on the indies in 2005 and it was pretty bizarre. He was always super good to me. He was one of the guys I'd still text after leaving, and it wasn't about the business, it was 'hey kid, how you doing?,' like you'd talk to your friends. I think it sucks. I don't think there's a single person in the wrestling business he didn't influence. He's going to be missed for sure," Punk said.
