Kevin Owens On Why He Dropped "Kill Steen Kill!"

Kevin Owens has exploded onto the WWE scene over the last couple of weeks, resulting in a signature win over John Cena last night at WWE Elimination Chamber. During the match, fans could be heard chanting "Fight Owens Fight," a chant that replaced "Kill Steen Kill," something he used on the independent circuit.

Owens appeared on last week's edition of Talk Is Jericho to talk over his career with host Chris Jericho. Towards the end of the podcast, Owens also explained why he dropped the popular "Kill Steen Kill" phrase when he came to the WWE.

"I decided to change it because the school shooting in Connecticut happened. There was also a specific incident and someone sent me a link to it, and I opened it and there was a guy sitting there playing my theme song and hitting himself in the head with a beer can and started bleeding," Owens explained.

Owens noted that the two incidents really put things in perspective for him and the catchphrase. He elaborated about his feelings on the video as well.

"The video was just called 'Kill Steen Kill.' That creeped me out for one, and then the whole school shooting happened and I didn't feel right doing it anymore. So then I changed it to "Fight Steen Fight," that's how it happened," Owens said.
